The Director for the Blue Carbon Program provides strategic and programmatic leadership within Conservation International’s (CI’s) multi-disciplinary blue carbon program. Sitting within the Center for Natural Climate Solutions and reporting to the Senior Director for the Blue Carbon Program, they play a key and visible role in leading the delivery of high-impact outputs and developing innovative projects and proposals to achieve CI’s vision and goals for nature based solutions to climate change. They are responsible for program management, ensuring that program strategies, initiatives and outcomes advance CI’s human development and conservation priorities. Duties are complex and include leading the design, implementation and integration of program strategies related to blue carbon and coastal climate change across CI. The Director provides broad programmatic, project, monitoring and technical oversight and continuously engages key internal and external partners critical to program success. They ensure compliance with CI policies, program and funding agreements and local requirements.

The Director will lead and support fundraising efforts including developing, reviewing and providing input on proposals, actively pursuing new sources of funding, ensuring coordination across programs in fundraising, and advancing funding relationships with key partners to secure program funding for regional and field activities. As appropriate and needed, they will build and leverage strategic alliances with NGOs, businesses, or other entities that can further CI’s mission. The Director will collaborate with staff throughout CI to ensure the program forms an integral part of achieving organization-wide goals. They will also identify capacity gaps and provide high-level oversight in implementing strategies that build capacity and drive program objectives forward. They will work with a high degree of independence and professionalism.


Programmatic Leadership

  • Refine and build our current pipeline of blue carbon projects, to be financed by carbon crediting or other investments, including an assessment of potential blue carbon strategies in each location
  • Provide oversight and team leadership to effectively implement program activities and ensure high-impact outputs. Directly and indirectly lead and manage program and technical staff.
  • Develop project objectives, work plans, and metrics.
  • Work with country programs and partners to identify opportunities and challenges, and to align potential projects to other national priorities 
  • Complete in-house delivery of high-level feasibility assessments for potential blue carbon projects
  • Provide leadership and alignment within the broader blue carbon program, including the Center for Natural Climate Solutions, Conservation Finance, Center for Oceans, and CI-wide to meet conservation priorities. 


  • Monitor, measure, interpret, and share results from projects and programs on a regular basis. Assist in the development of financial and progress reports. Modify strategies, work plans and budgets as needed.


  • Regularly lead and support on funding proposals and regional/global fundraising efforts.
  • Work with CI development staff to identify potential sources of support.
  • Pursue fundraising efforts targeted for but not limited to program strategies related to blue carbon ecosystems

Brand Building

  • Champion knowledge sharing and cross-program collaboration to build capacity and address capacity gaps.
  • Share CI’s expertise, best practices and amplify success with key audiences.
  • Continuously represent the organization externally. Serve as a trusted and visible point of contact for CI. 


  • Ensure CI is positioned as a recognized and sought after subject-matter expert in  blue carbon, mangroves and coastal adaptation and restoration.
  • Manage project budgets. 
  • Oversee technical aspects of agreements with contractors and vendors.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor


  • Flexible work location
  • Local and/or international travel of 25% or more, often in difficult travel conditions.
  • Ability to work in remote locations or under difficult working conditions.
  • Flexibility in work schedule in order to accommodate time differences among HQ, regions and field programs.



  • Ten years or more related experience. 
  • Demonstrated results in program or project management experience, preferably in the global conservation, NGO, advocacy or related for-profit arena. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects or initiatives involving multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • On the ground practical experience in coastal carbon project development and implementation.
  • Global understanding of ocean and coastal conservation priorities, nature-based solutions to climate change, and a working knowledge of conservation in multiple geographic regions.
  • Excellent technical and analytical skills, including demonstrated experience in strategy development. 
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, with proven ability to turn vision and strategies into outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to fundraise with governments, foundations, and private individuals, and experience managing multimillion dollar budgets with numerous sub-grantees and partners
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A record of success partnering with, and influencing, key stakeholders and building strong partnerships across public and private sectors and civil society.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish required.


  • Ability to work with diverse teams across many regions of the world and engage staff who are not direct reports in carrying out program strategies and objectives.
  • Knowledge of coastal marine science.
  • Understanding of marine climate change, carbon mitigation strategies and carbon finance.
  • Clear passion for achieving human well-being through biodiversity conservation and an ability to inspire colleagues and partners to engage in successfully launching this new program, highly desired.
