Director: Biodiversity Mainstreaming

An enthusiastic, dedicated, professional and responsible person is required to lead SANBI’s programme of work that seeks to unlock development opportunities from better biodiversity management through mainstreaming biodiversity opportunities and benefits into relevant government land use planning and decision making processes. This job offers a chance to make a real difference to development through unlocking SA’s ecological infrastructure opportunities.

Appointment requires: Postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline: science, social or management enhanced by a minimum of 5-10 years relevant experience. Applicants must demonstrate good communication and analytical skills as well as excellent interpersonal relations. Further requirements include a valid unendorsed Code B driver’s license.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INVOLVE:

  •  Programme leadership:

Lead and manage SANBI’s biodiversity mainstreaming programme which aims to strengthen the management of South Africa’s biodiversity assets and ecological infrastructure.

This includes:

  • Landuse and Environmental Assessment Programme, focusing on the mainstreaming biodiversity in environmental assessment especially EIAs; strategic leadership to the National Municipal Programme, development of appropriate decision support tools, and capacity building interventions across land use sectors including mining, agriculture and forestry.
  • To oversee SANBI’s Biodiversity Planning Programme, including supporting its key role in the development of bioregional plans, provincial biodiversity plans, the National Biodiversity Assessment, the National Protected Area Expansion Strategy, advice to provincial biodiversity planning initiatives as requested and other strategic national projects that may arise.
  • Linkages & networking: To foster strong external working relationships with partner organisations and target institutions to enable the uptake of biodiversity tools and information into relevant decision making processes.
  • Representation: to represent the Chief Director at relevant fora and networks; raise the profile of the activities of the Division among internal and external stakeholders and assist with identification and communication of key policy messages.

SANBI offers an all inclusive annual salary of R719 613.
