The Director, Annual Fund will be responsible for designing and developing a high-touch program that moves donors up the giving pyramid and for managing a portfolio of donors and prospects giving $5,000 and up. A key component of this program will be to accelerate the process of qualifying donors and prospects to ensure that they are receiving the proper treatment to maximize their engagement with and giving to Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). The Director will have bottom line responsibility for achieving budget goals and other metrics. The success of this program will be evaluated by the number of new recruits into the program, revenue generated and by the degree to which this program acts as a feeder track to the Major Gifts program. The overall goal is to increase the number of donors and the revenue stream from the program, with a short-term metric of increasing the number of donors by 20% in the first 18 months. The Director, Annual Fund will report to the Associate Vice President of Major Gifts.
 
Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute a vision for the program that inspires donors to engage with the organization and give generously
  • Manage CC program for the effective qualification, stewardship and solicitation of donors including: donor qualification meetings, regular mailings, personal treatment strategies, cultivation and retention events, email communications, donor teleconference calls and other tools
  • Understand EDF's complex programs and communicate effectively with donors about them
  • Work with Program and other Development staff to qualify every donor in the portfolio, and adapt treatment plan to match qualification
  • Develop and manage a network of staff and volunteers who are reaching out to CC donors on EDF's behalf
  • Proactively design and implement strategic treatment options and schedules to renew, upgrade and retain the donor segments within this portfolio, working closely with the Membership department and major gift portfolio managers
  • Ongoing analysis of program to assess what works well and adapt strategies accordingly
  • Partner with Prospect Research and others in the organization to identify prospects for the program, and then collaborate with other team members to attract, cultivate and transform these prospects into CC donors
  • Develop increasing financial goals and benchmarks for the Catalyst Circle donors, and ensure the goals are consistently met
  • Track and record all relevant information in EDF's donor database
  • Design and produce reports and analyses on donor revenue, demographic trends and other performance measurements as necessary
  • Work closely with Membership department to ensure seamless treatment of donors

 
Qualifications

  • Sufficient years as a development professional to aggressively, creatively and strategically grow the program
  • A proactive strategic thinker with the knowledge and willingness to move donors through the process
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and energy
  • Strong analytical abilities with a focus on action and results
  • Ability to inspire others and marshal organizational resources to accomplish clearly defined goals
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • The ability and motivation to work as a team player while being highly self-motivated and autonomous
  • A proactive and passionate fundraiser
  • Ability and motivation to navigate and be successful in a complex organization; adept at being flexible and nimble
  • Several years of demonstrated success as a front-line fundraiser, with increasing levels of responsibility
  • A high level of personal and professional confidence

This position will be located in the New York, NY office.
