Purpose of Job

To access funds to enable the delivery of the Trust’s objectives in Scotland.

Reporting and Responsibilities

The DO reports directly to the Grants Manager (GM) (based in Grantham).  Under the PDR (Personal Development Review) process Objectives and a Development Plan will be agreed and reviewed with the GM  quarterly and an annual PDR appraisal conducted. 

The DO’s role is to contribute to and deliver the Fundraising Plan for the Woodland Trust Scotland’s (WTS) work, in particular by optimising income from a wide range of funding sources with key responsibility for those listed below and assisting the GM as required.  The post requires strong collaboration with the Scotland team and other fundraising teams to optimise funding opportunities.

The ability to meet funding targets and represent the organisation in a professional and positive manner is essential.

Main Duties

1. Raise funds for the Trust’s agreed and planned projects in Scotland, including the core programme of budgeted works, as well as future projects or potential activities.  You will be expected to assist with, and to lead on certain, fundraising activities as appropriate; from project development, through to application, delivery and account management.  This role involves working with a wide range of funding resources including taking a lead on:

  • Charitable Trusts and Foundations including researching Charitable Trusts and project managing, preparing and submitting suitable approaches to Charitable Trusts
  • Landfill Tax Credit Schemes
  • Grant making bodies including Lottery Funds, Scottish Natural Heritage, enterprise companies, local authorities etc.  This work includes identifying and researching new grant opportunities, preparing and submitting applications and ensuring effective handover to the funded projects  UK team as appropriate

2. Monitor funding approaches made and monies received including processing income through the Trust’s accounting systems.  Also reporting accurately on a monthly basis for Scotland as well as providing key information for UK reports

3. To liaise with the Funded Projects Team to provide Account Management to funders and supporters.  Build and maintain relations with funders., with direction and guidance from the GM and work with the Communications Officer to capitalise on all PR opportunities arising from funds awarded

4. Take fundraising responsibility for some specific projects and take a lead on developing a fundraising case, planning the approach and making the ask

5. Initiate and build relationships with key internal and external contacts as this is key to the role. For example, the DO will work closely with other WTS staff and staff in the Fundraising Department especially the Regional Development, Charitable Trusts and Grants teams.  In addition, you will work closely with those staff providing support services at the Trust’s UK Headquarters in Grantham including Accounts, IT and Communications

6. Work closely with the Scotland team to identify and maximise fundable activities and projects.  Ensure good quality information is provided to funders as required and help project managers to understand the benefits and implications of funding for their work.

7. Ensure good administrative practices are carried out using corporate formats and processes whenever possible and maintaining accounts and up-to-date records.  Provide information and support for others within the Woodland Trust that may be reasonably requested from time to time and assist other staff with developing and implementing the strategic and corporate objectives of the Woodland Trust in the UK and Scotland in particular.

8. Any other duties that from time to time may be required under your line manager’s or the Scotland Director’s instruction

Profile of the DO

An enthusiastic fundraising professional with:

  • Excellent fundraising skills and experience, ideally within the voluntary sector
  • Experience of raising funds through Grants, Charitable Trusts, and Landfill Tax Credits,
  • Skill in project development, management and competent in financial management
  • Ability to prioritise and to work to tight deadlines
  • Excellent team working skills as well as an ability to work independently as required knowing when and how to seek advice, information and involve others
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A practical understanding of the importance of relation development
  • Confidence in representing the Trust in a professional and positive manner, ability to inspire support for our organisational aims
  • IT literate, especially Microsoft Office and use of databases (specific training will be provided)
  • An interest in, and understanding of, conservation, countryside management and community issues would be an advantage but is not essential

Travel is required within Scotland and occasionally elsewhere especially to our UK HQ at Grantham, Lincolnshire.  This may require occasional nights away from home.

Location

The post may be based at either the Woodland Trust’s  Office in Perth or Edinburgh and will involve travel throughout Scotland and UK wide in particular to the Trust’s central office at Grantham.
