Position/Title: Development Manager

Ecotrust’s Development Manager will be responsible for managing a suite of development activities designed to increase and diversify revenue. This individual will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of our fundraising efforts. The Development Manager will work with the Director of Development to implement the strategic vision of the department. S/he will be expected to contribute to the writing and editing of proposals/reports to ensure our applications are highly competitive, identify and research new donor prospects, manage the annual appeal process, and assist in the management and planning of donor events. In addition, this individual will oversee development department systems including record keeping, donor acknowledgement, and the maintenance of our database.

The Development Manager will report to the Director of Development and work closely with the Director of Community Partnerships, the Grant Writer & Manager, and the Development Coordinator. This position is a management role with the potential for the responsibility of direct reports.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day aspects of the Development department to best achieve Ecotrust’s mission and strategic fundraising goals as set by the Director of Development, including supervising the activities of development staff and other staff assisting with development activities.
  • Research funding opportunities and assist in proposal and report development; work closely with program staff and the Grant Writer & Manager to develop, write, and edit funding proposals and reports.
  • Oversee the management of the grant proposal and reporting schedule, ensuring all deadlines are met and regular updates are provided to donors.
  • Manage the execution of annual appeals, fundraising events, and other constituent building activities.
  • Work with the Director of Community Partnerships to develop and execute a strong corporate partnership program.
  • Oversee management and proliferation of Ecotrust’s database system (Raiser’s Edge) to ensure its integrity and use throughout the organization
  • Assist the development team in increasing revenue across revenue sources to create a diverse, robust funding profile for the organization and meet fundraising goals for each program area.
  • Assist in identifying potential new partnerships with corporations, foundations, and other organizations to help diversify funding opportunities for the organization.
  • Strengthen and maintain the department policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Director of Development and the Communication and Development teams in creating compelling prospect and donor communications, ensuring they are integrated with the look, feel, and format of Ecotrust.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Exceptional written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate and persuasive appeals, proposals and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly understand complicated subject areas, glean the critical elements, and communicate those elements to diverse audiences.
  • Keen attention to detail, including strong editing skills and project and task management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that allow strong working partnerships with program leads.
  • Demonstrated ability to write “on deadline” and work with the project managers to ensure internal deadlines are met.
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fundraising techniques and strategies.
  • Experience with creating budgets and financial reports.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.
  • Demonstrated experience as strong contributor in team environments.
  • An understanding of Ecotrust’s mission and exposure to the “natural model of development” or related models.

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for the mission of Ecotrust.
  • Experience working in deadline-driven environments.
  • 5+ years development experience with a record of success in managing the overall development process including: grant writing, annual appeal fundraising, prospecting and database management.
  • Experience managing staff and projects.
  • Proven record of success in managing multiple projects and successfully working under pressure to multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated expert skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, & Outlook.
  • Experience working in Raiser’s Edge and excellent knowledge of database management is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent understanding of environmental and conservation issues.
  • Good team player, flexible work style, excellent interpersonal skills and tolerance for ambiguity.
  • Previous management experience in a non-profit environment is preferred.

This position will report to the Director of Development.
