Overview
The Green Building Alliance (GBA) Development Director leads the creation and implementation of GBA’s development strategy. Reporting to GBA’s CEO, the Development Director achieves GBA’s foundation, membership, and sponsorship fundraising goals.
Green Building Alliance (GBA) is a nonprofit organization that inspires and proves the value of healthy, high performing places for everyone, while equipping stakeholders with the tools to build them. GBA’s membership and sponsorship programs are designed to provide maximum benefit to donors, while raising funds to support GBA’s programming and events. GBA’s web site is go-gba.org.
Duties:
- Lead and manage GBA's overall development efforts to raise an annual budget of $1.5 million
- Create and implement annual development plan and strategy
- Create and implement specific actionable plans for GBA membership, sponsorship, individual giving, government grants, foundation grants, and other opportunities as they arise
- Work with GBA programming team to ensure the best service possible for sponsors and members
- Work with GBA CEO and Communications Director to communicate GBA’s mission, vision, and values to current and prospective members, sponsors, and funders
- Develop and manage fundraising capacity of GBA Board of Directors
- Provide regular development reports to CEO and Board of Directors
- Manage the Member Services Director
- Serve as a spokesperson at public events and with the media
- Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential corporate, government, and foundation sponsors, and individual donors/members
- Write grant proposals and reports to foundation, corporate, and government funders
- Train and lead other staff to support fundraising/membership and marketing efforts
- Analyze and understand the potential member/sponsor market; implement development plans to grow GBA's membership/sponsorship base from the most appropriate market segments
Education, Skills, & Abilities
- Two to four years of development experience with a nonprofit, preferably with significant foundation and corporate sponsorship experience, or direct sales/business development experience in a service industry; emphasis on corporate sponsorships or corporate sales is a plus
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills, including ability to adroitly navigate and develop, maintain, and leverage relationships with small and large local and regional organizations
- Existing relationships with regional foundations preferred
- A solid understanding of the green building industry is important and preferred
- Extensive research skills using Internet and other secondary resources
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, sustainability, or related field required; Master’s degree a plus
- Demonstrable talents in marketing and sales, project management, grant writing, and program development
- Experience working with senior level executives in a corporate environment (C-level/VP)
- High-energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, flexible, team player; high degree of initiative and attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to prospect, cultivate, and manage new accounts
- Emotional intelligence and relationship-building skills, with insight into the needs and motivation of others a must
General Requirements:
- The Development Director must complete assignments at GBA offices on the South Side of Pittsburgh
- Ability to work evenings and travel as necessary; some weekend work and regional travel required to attend and support GBA and GBA partner activities
