About Wild Salmon Center

The mission of the Wild Salmon Center (WSC) is to identify, understand and protect the best wild salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim. WSC devises and implements practical strategies, based on the best science, to protect forever these extraordinary places and their biodiversity. WSC is an international organization with a staff of 30 and is based in Portland, Oregon, in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center.

Position Summary

The Development Associate is a key member of Wild Salmon Center's Development and Communications team and works closely with other members of staff to help achieve the organization's fundraising goals.  Primary areas of responsibility are: managing WSC's Annual Fund program; planning and coordinating fundraising events; and managing the organization's Raiser's Edge database.  This position is a regular, full-time position.

Education

A Bachelor's degree is required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and help lead a comprehensive Annual Fund program that implements strategies that focus on identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of WSC's financial supporters and constituents.  Annual Fund strategies include plans for retaining existing donors, acquisition of new donors, increasing average gift amount, and managing donors and donor prospects in the Raiser's Edge database.  Responsibilities also include creating and working with appropriate WSC staff and vendors to create effective hard copy and electronic solicitation and communications pieces.
  • Plan, organize, and attend WSC's fundraising events to engage, recruit, and retain WSC donors and prospective donors.  Events may range from large galas and dinners to smaller lunches and outreach events, and may take place in the Portland area as well as locations throughout the Pacific Rim.
  • Manage and administer the organization’s database, Raiser's Edge, and be responsible for its day-to-day operations.  Responsibilities include data entry, accurate and complete list and report generation, maintaining and improving data quality, gift processing, prospect research, relationship management, technology upgrades, end user training, and maintaining and improving documentation of database procedures.
  • Collaborate closely with WSC's Development and Communications departments to provide assistance, coordination, and support for a variety of activities related to WSC's fundraising strategies and goals.  Support and track activities and benchmarks related to each of the organization's funders, which include individual donors, foundations, corporations, and government sources.
  • Serve as liaison between Development and Accounting and IT departments and perform related duties which include monthly reconciliation of gifts, annual reconciliation with auditors, tracking outstanding pledges and payments, and coordinating data conversions and software upgrades as needed.
  • Coordinate and manage WSC's thank-you and acknowledgement process to ensure all contributions are recognized in a timely and professional manner.
  • Create and generate departmental reports using Crystal Reports software.
  • Contribute to the creation of the Development department's annual budget and work plan.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise Development volunteers and interns and ensure timely and effective coordination and completion of projects.
  • Maintain the Development department's hard copy and electronic filing systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least three years of non-profit fundraising experience and a strong understanding of skills and principles required for maintaining excellent donor relations.
  • Outstanding attention to detail, a proactive approach, a high level of organization, and independent judgment in carrying out the duties described above.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and ability to create materials in a professional manner; creative thinker.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects, ensuring high performance standards and adherence to hard deadlines.
  • Up-to-date on current fundraising, direct marketing, and communications trends as well as current laws affecting charitable giving.
  • Substantial experience with development databases (Raiser's Edge preferred), including data entry, queries and reports (Crystal Reports preferred).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Some travel associated with events may be required.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of the Wild Salmon Center and an understanding of environmental issues.
