ForestEthics is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, career-oriented Development Associate to play a critical leadership role in the advancement of a growing development department – including supporting the management of 70+ active foundation relationships.  A successful candidate will demonstrate leadership, project management skills, acute attention to detail, and the ability to thrive as a self-starter in a very fast-paced, deadline-driven work environment. This is a mid-level position with incredible growth potential within an emerging international environmental non-profit. This is a full-time, exempt position with excellent benefits, located in ForestEthics’ San Francisco office.

Essential Functions

Foundation Relations 

  • Supervise and regularly maintain an updated, accurate, and comprehensive grants calendar.
  • Create and confirm accuracy of checklists to guide report and proposal creation.
  • Proofread, format and copyedit final versions of reports and proposals.

Investor Research and Portfolio Management

  • Conduct research on current and prospective investors, including but not limited to foundations and major donors.
  • Create comprehensive briefings for fundraising staff in advance of all donor meetings and special events.
  • Create new and manage existing donor portfolios, confirming that all records are up-to-date, accurate, well researched (including but not limited to donor histories, tasks/activities and relationships).

Department Administration 

  • Serve as initial point of contact for donor communication and respond to requests for development related materials.
  • Acknowledge all incoming gifts, and conduct follow up on failed transactions.
  • Generate accurate reports and supervise timely knowledge management and data validation in SalesForce CRM.
  • Schedule external donor meetings for Development staff, as needed.
  • Schedule, coordinate, attend, and transcribe all departmental meetings.
  • Contribute to department planning along with Senior Development Officer, including: meeting agendas, timelines, systems development, infrastructure planning and work plans.

Qualifications

  • 3 years development experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Salesforce (or similar relationship donor database) mandatory.
  • Experience with Foundation Search, Wealth Engine, or similar donor research tools.
  • Independent, self-motivated with a desire to provide support to advance ForestEthics’ mission
  • Enthusiasm and passion for relationship cultivation and management
  • Computer proficiency in computer applications, including spreadsheet, word processing and internet:  Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office 2010, and prior contact management systems experience preferred
  • Demonstrated success managing tasks, identifying organizational needs, and problem solving with minimal supervision
  • Highly organized with acute attention to detail
  • Flexible, creative, able to prioritize multiple tasks, and able to thrive in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
  • Excellent project management, follow-through, and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Basic math skills as demonstrated by the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; and the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • High reasoning skills as demonstrated by the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; and the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Intermediate language skills as demonstrated by the ability to read and interpret documents such as operating instructions or procedure manuals, ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and ability to speak effectively before groups of people
  • Sense of humor

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Clear vision at 25 inches or less to view computer screen and read documents
  • Must be able to sit at desk and work on a computer for long periods of time
