"Emissions what?"

The European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is probably the most important climate policy you may never have heard of. You and most others.

Sandbag analyses this crucial tool that caps half of Europe's carbon emissions and brings the data to life through maps and hard-hitting reports. We outline what needs done to repair it and we lobby for the changes to be made. The difference our recommended actions would make is measured in the billions of tonnes of avoided pollution over the coming decades. Help us take the next step in the challenging task of making complex climate policy accessible to all those who have a stake in it.

We are currently looking for a design intern to help us 2-3 days a week with a project to improve the way we communicate our research and data analysis, specifically creating an "ABC of carbon markets". This role is ideally suited to a recent graduate of a design related university program who wishes to gain work experience in the environmental sector.

Extensive coverage of our work means potentially significant exposure for your creations!

Job Description:

  • Help build an "ABC of carbon markets" for our website, which will potentially be extended to a print version.
  • Improve the way information is presented in Sandbag's reports using state of the art information graphics (see http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/ and http://www.gapminder.org/ for examples).
  • Help our web developer improve the online communications strategy.

Key Attributes:

  • Must have either work experience or be a recent university graduate in graphic design. Ideally with experience in web design.
  • Interest in information graphics and displaying data in an engaging way.
  • A keen interest in climate change and related issues.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a team member and on his/her own initiative when the situation demands.
  • Motivated and enthusiastic!

Application Closing Date: 10:00 Monday 22nd November 2010

Start date: 1st December 2010

The internship would normally last for 3 months minimum. It is unpaid however reasonable travel cost will be refunded and a meal allowance of £10/day will be provided.

To apply please send your portfolio, examples of your work or a link to your website, a covering letter and CV to patrick@sandbag.org.uk.
