DEPUTY HEARTLAND DIRECTOR The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), an international conservation organization invites applications for the post of Deputy Heartland Director, Maringa/Lopori-Wamba (MLW) Heartland. This position will be responsible for co-managing AWF’s conservation program in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and will be based in Kinshasa, with significant time in the field. The successful candidate would:-
  1. Work with the Heartland director, to further develop AWF’s landscape conservation program in the Maringa/Lopori-Wamba forest landscape and the conservation and development policy of the MLW-program.
  2. Support the Heartland director to more effectively coordinate the implementation of the program in the MLW-landscape, given its complexity.
  3. Represent AWF in the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) to ensure effective collaboration with USAID and other partners.
  4. Represent AWF on national and provincial government level, and on a regional conservation and development policy level, with emphasis on COMIFAC.
  5. Coordinate the MLW-consortium, i.e. work proactively in collaboration with actual and future partners (ICRAF, WF, SNV, REFADD, UMD) to develop the Landscape Land Use Planning Committee which guides participatory implementation of this program.
  6. Support the Heartland director to manage day-to-day operations of the Maringa/Lopori-Wamba program, which includes: effective administration and tracking of the Maringa/Lopori-Wamba project finances, program monitoring and evaluation, timely donor reporting, and effective coordination and cooperation between project partners.
  7. Provide technical oversight to AWF’s Maringa/Lopori-Wamba program with focus on Landscape Land Use Planning and zoning.
  8. Develop further collaboration with Congolese community-based organizations in Maringa/Lopori-Wamba who can effectively contribute and benefit from this program.
  9. Work closely with the Maringa/Lopori-Wamba landscape management team, ICCN, ministry representatives and other stakeholders on forest and land management policy in DRC.
  10. Work with the Program Design Officer to develop and design proposals for submission to key government and foundation donors. 
  11. Support the Heartland Director with development of working budgets.
 Key Skills and Abilities:·         A post graduate qualification (Msc or PhD) in forestry, ecology, natural resource management or another field directly related to conservation;·         10 or more years of proven administrative and field experience in conservation; ·         Experience working and implementing projects in central Africa, preferably DRC;·         Proficiency in both French and English (spoken and written) is required; competency in Lingala is preferred;·         Demonstrated ability to build capacity of multiple stakeholders to engage in landscape planning and management;·         Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to build coalitions of interest, to negotiate, to manage conflict and familiarity with protocols associated with working in DRC;·         Ability to communicate effectively with a wide group of collaborators, including proactive sharing of information and reporting;·         Genuine respect for the skills and perspectives of communities, partner organizations and the private sector;·         Awareness and sensitivity to landscape conservation approaches; familiarity with ‘new conservation’ methods, including community conservation and wildlife enterprises;·         Ability to work and travel in harsh physical environment i.e. isolated remote region of DRC, with very basic amenities, working with war-torn local rural population;·         Commitment to AWF and its mission. If you are interested in applying for this position, please send your CV and a covering letter, to HumanResources@awfke.org by April 30, 2008.
