The position of Deputy Director of Programs offers a unique opportunity for the ideal candidate who wishes to commit their skills, intelligence and heart to the mission of addressing environmental and social justice issues in the global south. The successful candidate will join the Program Department based in Boulder, Colorado, reporting to the Director of Programs.

 

Role
The Deputy Director of Programs is responsible for all aspects of grantmaking, including coordinating the work and capacity building of our global network of advisors in making grants, helping to shape grantmaking strategy, evaluating the results of grantmaking and interpreting them to other staff and donors, managing staff and consultants around the world, and planning and budgeting. The Deputy Director of Programs will manage communications within our advisory network and develop and implement systems that enable advisors to more effectively network and exchange information and ideas.

The Deputy Director of Programs works in an integrated team with volunteer advisors, overseas partner institutions, and administrative and development staff to ensure high quality grantmaking and mobilization of sufficient resources to support the program.

Responsibilities
• Facilitate the grantmaking work of multiple regional and global programs to make effective environment and social change grants around the world;
• Supervise and support field coordinators of Greengrants’ regional grantmaking programs;
• Strengthen the capacity of Greengrants’ global grantmaking advisory network to exchange experiences and strategies, develop collaborative initiatives, and connect grantees;
• Organize meetings, exchanges, and other opportunities for Greengrants’ global network of grantmaking advisors to share strategies and experiences, develop collaborative initiatives, and connect grantees;
• Coordinate processes of evaluation, analysis and learning based upon Global Greengrants’ grantmaking;
• Support the establishment and growth of independent grantmaking funds in other countries and strengthen the partnership between these funds and Global Greengrants Fund;
• Support the Director of Programs in planning and budgeting for program related activities to ensure that they are coordinated with our advisory network, address global trends, and promote Greengrants’ mission;
• Support fundraising and communications staff in communicating program values, strategies and results as well as regional and thematic issues to donors; Strengthen Global Greengrants Fund’s role as a leader in international grassroots philanthropy through building partnerships with other funders and bringing the organization’s experience and perspective into donor conferences and forums.

Qualifications
• Minimum of six years of experience working with social movements, activists, and NGOs around the world in support of environmental protection and social change;
• Advanced degree or equivalent experience in relevant discipline, such as natural resources, social sciences or international affairs;
• Understanding of social and environmental issues in the Global South;
• Experience working on women’s and gender issues internationally;
• Experience in raising and leveraging funds, especially from institutional donors;
• Demonstrated experience and contacts with donors, including private foundations.
• Excellent communication skills – written and oral;
• Previous staff or volunteer and budget management experience;
• Proven ability to think innovatively and strategically;
• Fluency in English and at least one other language (Chinese, French, or Russian preferred);
• Experience coordinating international and/or grassroots networks desired;
• Knowledgeable about and committed to the mission of Greengrants;
• Willingness and ability to travel internationally (several short trips per year).
