The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a leading international conservation, science and education charity. Role Profile:

ZSL is seeking an experienced, innovative and adaptable individual to support overseeing and developing our multidisciplinary Conservation Programme in Indonesia as our Deputy Country Manager. In this exciting and challenging role the successful applicant will be required to demonstrate a range of leadership qualities to support the Country Manager in the management and development of the Indonesian team and their work in line with ZSL Indonesia and wider programmatic strategies. This person will grow and manage ZSL Indonesia existing grant portfolio so that funds can be raised in a timely manner to implement ZSL’s conservation strategies.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The post-holder will report to the Country Manager in Indonesia and support them in the management of a team of staff based in Indonesia. Main responsibilities will include:

  • Management and support project implementation and development.
  • Oversee streamlining staff management and administration.
  • Provide technical support for the species conservation components of the larger Programme, including wildlife monitoring, data collection and analysis, and publication.
  • Manage the production of strategies for programme development and grant writing and timely reporting.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with project collaborators, stakeholders and donors.
  • Provide technical advice to develop the management capacity of our in-country team.
  • Support the liaison with the programme team to coordinate cross-Society programme activities.
  • Represent ZSL at international meetings, to promote ZSL Indonesia and its conservation work.

Person Specification:

The post-holder should have a proven track record in conservation project development in Asia and relevant experience and/or a higher degree in an appropriate subject such as conservation biology, environmental economics, conservation/development policy or a related discipline. Candidates will also ideally have:

  • Extensive experience working at senior level, managing and implementing programmes internationally.
  • Proven staff management and leadership experience in a conservation and or development setting including designing, planning and monitoring.
  • Extensive experience with species monitoring and conservation in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia.
  • A strong understanding of biodiversity and wider conservation issues in Asia.
  • Prior experience working in the region is highly desirable in particular in Indonesia with an established network of NGO’s.
  • Sound levels of finance management and reporting to donors and under deadlines.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Ability to speak Bahasa or Malay, is a plus.
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Proven grant-writing and management ability is essential, particularly experience of bi-lateral donors such as DFID and USAID.

You will be a self-starter who enjoys finding solutions to complex situations and a real drive to complete projects within set timescales.

Please Note: The position will be based at ZSL office in Bogor, Indonesia and will involve significant travel to relevant countries including our Main offices in London, Regents Park.
