The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), one of the nation’s most influential environmental organizations, is seeking an experienced government specialist to serve as Director of Government Affairs Director in its Washington, DC office. This senior level position, which reports to the Director of Programs, manages, coordinates and provides strategic guidance for NRDC's policy interactions with Congress and the executive branch of the Federal government. 

 

NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization with 1.2 million members and online activists. With offices in New York, Washington, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Beijing, our staff of nearly 375 lawyers, scientists, policy analysts and others works to protect the environment and public health through advocacy and education.

 

The Director of Government Affairs will collegially direct and coordinate NRDC's congressional and executive branch advocacy across the organization, and will work collaboratively with other environmental organizations.  As part of this job, the Director of Government Affairs is expected to maintain high-level relations with congressional and agency offices, manage the program’s budget and oversee the advocacy efforts of various NRDC supporter affiliate groups.  The Government Affairs Director also supervises a dedicated supporting team of professionals, including the Legislative Director and an Affiliate Advocacy Coordinator, and works closely with NRDC’s Director of Advocacy Campaigns. 

 

The Director of Government Affairs collaborates with NRDC's communications and membership departments on message development for media strategies and public education efforts, and participates in fundraising efforts, including contacts with donors, in conjunction with NRDC's development department. In addition, the Director of Government Affairs works with NRDC's Compliance Director to ensure that all legislative staff complies fully with lobbying and electioneering restrictions and reporting requirements.

 

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Congress, the Federal government, or in other government affairs positions that involve working closely with Congress and the Federal Government.  They should also possess exceptional written and oral communication skills, natural leadership abilities, strong analytical and management skills, the ability to organize and lead major campaigns and first-hand knowledge of environmental policy and politics. Candidates also must possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and be able to work effectively in a team environment.
