POSITION

Database Specialist position (Research Associate II) available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands, to be assigned at Pohakuloa Training Area, Hawaii.

 

ORGANIZATION

The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DOD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. LOCATION

Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA), on the Island of Hawaii, is a 133,000-acre Army training facility located at 6,000-8000 feet elevation in the saddle region between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. The Island of Hawaii is often called the “Big Island”, and at more than 4,000 square miles it is nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined.  The resident population of the Big Island is over 177,000, and there is an abundance of recreation opportunities, picturesque landscapes, and attractive neighborhoods.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for designing, constructing, implementing, and maintaining databases as directed by the PTA Natural Resource Office Ecological Data Program Manager to meet programmatic needs including creating and testing databases and backup systems; creating database reports and queries; developing processes to verify the integrity of data housed, ensuring maximum performance and uptime; and providing continuous implementation support through the development of user manuals and training. Responsible for database recovery, performance analysis, and data dictionary maintenance. Install software or updates and assist with hardware and software configuration. Responsible for the security of databases.  Analyze data and make recommendations on the performance and efficiency of the data. May be involved in data modeling and database optimization. Provide occasional technical assistance to the Ecological Data Program Manager including IT support and maintenance.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

BS/BA in natural resource management, environmental science, ecology, or a closely related field with a strong educational or experiential background in data management systems. A minimum of one year of work experience related to information management and design of relational databases. Experience developing applications in VBA or similar programming language. Experience in relational database management including concepts of database normalization, logical and conceptual models, relational database design standards, and database management practices.  Experience in information management for natural resource management projects preferred. Experience with GIS (ArcGIS) including data development consistent with FGDC standards, GIS interface with databases and GPS preferred. Some experience with computer network administration, including network architecture of a standalone LAN, and PC and laptop maintenance preferred. Must have effective oral and written communication skills. The Database Specialist should be able to interpret and write complex structured query language (SQL) queries, establish standards and best practices for SQL, create reports and user-friendly interfaces using VBA or other similar programming languages.

SALARY

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Range $50,000-$65,000.  Position is contingent on the availability of funding for the Natural Resource program at Pohakuloa Training Area.
