The Energy Development IT Unit within DECC is responsible for developing and supporting a wide range of e-business applications which assist DECC in regulating the Oil and Gas and Electricity Supply industries. The IT systems have been developed over the past 10 years using novel technology, and are supported and enhanced by a small mixed team comprising permanent staff and contractors. In addition new projects are also under development.

The vacancies centre on IT development and programming using modern development techniques and tools such as: Oracle 11g database, SQL, PL/SQL, PL/SQL Web pages, FOX, HTML, Java, Java –JSP, NT Oracle Developer Suite, XML, XSLT and TOAD. Candidates should have an aptitude for working in a technical environment. They will be given training in the relevant tool set and will work alongside IT professionals.

The year’s placement involves an induction and training period between 2-3 months culminating in a small project followed by assignment to development and support projects. This training includes a 2-week Oracle Database training course. Work is very ‘hands on’ and successful candidates are expected to learn quickly, to apply their training effectively and add-value to their work. Candidates should be keen to learn and are encouraged to sit Oracle certification examinations.

At the end of the year students will have gained significant knowledge of Oracle database technology, developing on-line e-business systems using modern XML techniques and will have had the opportunity to gain knowledge by working alongside experienced IT professionals. As well as developing their IT skills, successful applicants will have been able to develop skills in team working, time management and communication.

The student will also have opportunities to attend the DECC School to develop an understanding of energy and climate change and related issues.
