Description

SANBI is in the process of compiling a database of people who are interested in periodically working as research assistants to our scientists and post graduate students.

We invite interested individuals who will be available to do fieldwork in the next year (to December 2010) to register on our database. We are expecting students to register, and we realise that availability will be primarily during vacations.

Formal qualifications are not a prerequisite, but field experience and enthusiasm for working outdoors are very important qualifications. Applicants must be South African citizens or have a valid South African work permit.

This is an opportunity to gain practical research experience of South Africa 's rich biodiversity, and to work with established scientists, so we are encouraging science students to register.

Compensation will be determined by the level of assistance required and will be at an hourly rate determined by guidelines of the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) (rates range between R22.22 and 39.68 per hour – 8 hours per day maximum).

Please complete the attached Research Assistant application form and forward it along with a brief letter of motivation (½ to1 page in length) and a letter of recommendation of one referee (based on previous field experience), to: recruitmentct@sanbi.org with the Subject: Research Assistant application – Applied Biodiversity Research or fax to 021 762 3229. Postal applications may be addressed to the Deputy Director : Human Resources, South African National Biodiversity Institute, Private Bag X7, Claremont, 7735.
