Description

The Sundarbans Reserved Forest is approximately 6000 km2 and accounts for 44% of total forest cover of Bangladesh. Conservation of this unique mangrove habitat is necessary for protection of its biodiversity and to secure the essential ecological services upon which Bangladesh depends. The Sundarban Environment and Livelihoods Project (SEALS) aims at improving and restoring the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) capacity to manage the Sundarbans Reserve Forest. One component of this project is the improvement of patrolling efforts across the forest by implementing a new monitoring system using Management Information SysTem (MIST). MIST is an established system used to monitor patrolling efforts, and is already implemented in countries such as Russia, Cambodia, Uganda and Thailand.

This role will involve living and working in Bangladesh for at least 6 months to implement MIST for the local forestry department.  The role will be split between Dhaka and Khulna with some time spent in the Sundarbans Reserved Forest. It will involve taking part in user requirement workshops, planning the technical design, configuring MIST, technical testing, system delivery and post-pilot support.

This is a unique opportunity for someone with a technical background who has a readiness to work abroad in conditions that may sometimes be challenging. The successful candidate will be someone who wants to either move into conservation work or to make a significant difference in a developing country.
