Bird Studies Canada (BSC) is seeking a full-time Data Technician, to assist with the development and maintenance of database and software applications in support of BSC's research and monitoring projects, including the integration of external datasets into relevant databases. He/she reports to the Senior Scientist, National Data Centre, and works closely with the British Columbia Program Manager and British Columbia Breeding Bird Atlas Coordinator. The position is based either at the Pacific Wildlife Research Centre where the BSC British Columbia Program is co-located with the Canadian Wildlife Service in Delta, or at BSC's headquarters at Long Point, Ontario. This is a fixed term position (to 31 March 2011), with good prospects for renewal and development subject to funding and demonstration of good performance.

The position requires either a Diploma or B.Sc. in computer sciences with relevant experience in managing biological survey and/or citizen-science datasets (preferably birds), or a B.Sc. in the life sciences with solid experience in database development and/or programming. We are looking for a highly organized and motivated individual to work on multiple projects simultaneously, with at least two years work experience in database application software used for the management of biological data. Ideally, the candidate will also have a working knowledge of ArcGIS systems. Experience with additional programming languages and standards, web site design, and/or the ability and a strong interest to learn, would be valuable assets. Candidates must be fluent in written and spoken English.

The salary range for this position is $30,133 - $42,076, depending on experience, plus 3 wks paid vacation pro-rated for the length of this contract. We are looking for someone to start in October or early November. Competition closes 10 October 2011.
