While this post will have a base in either Peterborough or Aberdeen, JNCC has been adopting a more flexible approach to working options and, once we are able to return to working in our office locations, our people will retain flexibility about where they choose to work through our hybrid working policy.

Hours of work:                     Full-time

Normal minimum hours of attendance for the post are 36 hours per week over a 5-day period, Monday to Friday.

Flexi time is available. This post may also be suitable for job share. 

Annual Leave:

Short Summary:

The role will involve having a good, broad understanding of JNCC’s work and particularly being able to integrate data protection with a broader business understanding. Managing a small team of data specialists, the postholder will assist the Team Leaders and Director in delivering Data Protection responsibilities for JNCC as well as helping to develop Information Management strategy. Liaising with the Defra Data Protection Officer (DPO), the role involves a high degree of responsibility and autonomy. The postholder will be expected to quickly obtain the information needed and provide high quality advice and guidance as efficiently and effectively as possible working with colleagues at all levels across JNCC.

The Digital and Data Solutions team is responsible for delivering a diverse portfolio of projects within JNCC. Responsible for the technical underpinnings behind JNCCs work, the team also provides innovative approaches to data, information management, and systems delivery. Projects are cross-cutting, and the post holder will work collaboratively within JNCC and with external partners to deliver good data protection and information management processes.

Expertise and experience in data protection would be helpful but evidence of transferable skills but training, support and advice will be available. The successful candidate would be expected to take, and pass, the General practitioner certificate in data protection within six months of appointment.

Job Description: Post Duties

The main duties of the post are to:

  • Act as JNCCs Data Protection Manager, liaising with DEFRAs Data Protection Officer (DPO) and providing advice and guidance on data protection to colleagues at all levels across JNCC.
  • Work at pace to deliver advice and guidance around data incidents, conduct data protection audits, breach notification processes, and other data protection responsibilities as required by the DEFRA DPO.
  • Develop specialist data protection knowledge to share with colleagues to equip them to meet the data protection challenges of their role
  • Deliver training, workshops, and meetings to identify issues, propose solutions and continuously develop the data protection knowledge of colleagues across JNCC
  • Provide challenge in a professional and effective way to deliver improvements in how personal data is processed
  • Raise awareness of data protection across the organisation and develop helpful and easy to use resources available to staff
  • Identify areas where compliance should be improved and delivering these improvements
  • Advise the Information Management teamlet on how to progress Microsoft 365 implementation and adoption of hybrid working with respect to data protection.
  • Line manage and perform day-to-day management of a team of data specialists, encouraging good data practice and developing a broad range of skills
  • Maintain a broad understanding of JNCC business, including the adoption of new approaches and priorities.

Technical

  • Good understanding of data protection issues (or have transferable skills and experience and demonstrate interest and ability to pass the general practitioner examination)
