UNEP-WCMC is the specialist biodiversity assessment arm of theUnited Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) based in Cambridge, UK.  Working with partners worldwide, the Centre provides objective, scientifically rigorous products and services to help decision makers learn about the value of biodiversity and apply this knowledge.  We are now expanding our Informatics Programme and seeking a Data Manager to lead the implementation of the Centre’s new GIS (Geographical Information Systems) data management system. 

The post-holder will be the focal-point for GIS data management at the Centre.  They will proactively liaise with the Centre’s GIS users and promote good data use practices, also establishing links between the Centre’s data management system and data streams occurring at Programme level. 

Reporting to the Head of Informatics the post-holder will technically oversee the creation of the GIS data management system, build and populate the database and online metadata catalogue, administering, maintaining and upgrading the system once it is created.  They will liaise with the IT support team to maintain the GIS software to ensure centre-wide upgrades and the installation of software for new starters, and promote good data management and practices across the Centre.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience working with Enterprise GIS and have previously held a position of responsibility within their organisation.  They will be highly competent in Database administration using SQL language, Metadata management, ESRI product suite, Open-source GIS software and Programming.
