Environmental Job Trends and Statistics (UK and USA) –  for the period 1^st – 30^th September 2009  

Stop Dodo (www.stopdodo.com) have finalized their first monthly data compilation of trends in the environmental job market for the UK and USA.  The data is for the period 1st to 30th September 2009.  The data represents the first comprehensive analysis of the environmental job market and is extracted from the daily monitoring of hundreds of environmental website and environmental job portals.  A total of 954 job vacancies* were surveyed in the UK and USA during the period 1 - 30 September 2009 Mr. Andrew Coleman of Stopdodo.com said: "Green Jobs are thought to be one of the fastest growing sectors and our data will ultimately provide an insight into the seasonal and long term growths and fluctuations.  Initially focusing on the UK and USA our data is very timely in the face of a global recession.  We plan to publish month-on-month results which will ultimately create an accurate view of the environment profession." Andrew commented: “Having been involved in the Environmental Recruitment sector for 15 years it has been noticeable that there has been a severe downturn in this sector, particularly during the Summer of 2009.  As the credit crunch bites the implications for the environmental job market is dire.  It is my opinion that the market will not begin to expand significantly again until Spring 2010.  However, let us hope that our monthly figures prove me wrong and we see growth during the Autumn period.” 

The survey broadly categories 7 key sectors: Low Carbon Technologies; Conservation & Ecology; Environmental Protection & Management; Green Tourism; CSR; Education Administration and Support roles   

UK Results 1 - 30 September 2009 

A total of 299 job vacancies* were surveyed in the UK during the period 1 - 30 September 2009 

·                     Conservation & Ecology (39%) - This covers, Nature, Ecology, Biology, Biodiversity & Ecosystems

·                     Low Carbon Technologies (31%) - This covers Climate Change, Low Carbon, Energy Efficiency, Renewables, Transport and Sustainability

·                     Environmental Protection & Management (17%) - This covers Environmental Protection & Management (EIA, EA, EMS etc), Waste, Recycling, Pollution

·                     Education (4%)

·                     Administration and Support Roles Marketing, Communications, PR, Admin, Sales, Legal etc (5%)

·                     CSR (3%)

·                     Tourism (1%) - Green Tourism

Further 

·                     The most numerous jobs listed - Conservation & Ecology - 39% (115) - followed by the category Low Carbon Technologies31% (92).

·                     The 'Not For Profit / Charitable' sector was the most prolific recruiter - 44% (133)

·                     Most vacancies listed per Sector - Conservation & Ecology roles within the 'Not For Profit / Charitable' sector - 22% (65) 

Additionally: 

·                     16% (48) of vacancies were listed by the Private sector within the Low Carbon Technologies category.

·                     5% (16) of vacancies were Administration and Support Roles    

USA Results 1 - 30 September 2009  

A total of 655 job vacancies* were surveyed in the USA during the period 1 - 30 September 2009 

·                     Conservation & Ecology (46%) - This covers, Nature, Ecology, Biology, Biodiversity & Ecosystems

·                     Environmental Protection & Management (27%) - This covers Environmental Protection & Management (EIA, EA, EMS etc), Waste, Recycling, Pollution

·                     Low Carbon Technologies (21%) - This covers Climate Change, Low Carbon, Energy Efficiency, Renewables, Transport and Sustainability

·                     Education (1%)

·                     Administration and Support Roles (4%)

·                     CSR (1%)

·                     Tourism (0%) - Green Tourism 

Further: 

·                     The most numerous jobs listed - Conservation & Ecology - 46% (303) - followed by the category Environmental Protection & Management 27% (181)

·                     The 'Public Sector' was the most prolific recruiter - 50% (324)

·                     Most vacancies listed per Sector - Conservation & Ecology roles within the ‘Public Sector' - 31% (203) Additionally: 

·                     13% (84) of vacancies were listed by the Private sector within the Low Carbon Technologies category.

·                     4% of vacancies were Administration and Support Roles

Notes: *           Figures are accumulated from daily monitoring of over 700 environmental websites and Environmental Job websites in the UK and USA.  Figures include UK and USA central government and agencies.  To avoid inflating figures by surveying all environmental recruitment agency jobs (agencies often recruit for the same clients), the figures only include vacancies from one (1) UK and USA agency.Figures do not include unpaid voluntary or intern roles, nor do they include specialsms such as Environment, Health and Safety, pure Engineering or Planning roles, Hydrology or Soil management.
