This is an exciting and challenging role that sits at the heart of the organisation's response to Chemicals Regulation and our new role outside of the EU. The Chemicals Programme was set up to help consolidate existing regulatory resource in this field, shape and manage the delivery of new roles arising as a result of EU Exit and set a new direction for our Chemicals Regulation work.

Interpreting EA and external data is essential to enable us to fulfil our potential influence in this area. We are recruiting a fixed term data analyst who will work closely with one other data analyst, and with other team members, to provide influential information. Future work includes:
• Operation of CANARY- a data and analysis tool that provides geographically referenced chemical LCMS/GCMS scan data
• Data interpretation to support the chemicals Prioritisation and Early Warning System
• Interpretation of environmental data to inform risk assessment
• Bringing together data to develop new metrics on chemical exposure and impacts
• Provision of data externally for use in pesticide authorisation
• Data exchange with the NORMAN network of chemical laboratories
The post sits within the Chemicals Strategic and Regulatory Planning Team, which leads on developing a strategic approach to chemical management, commissioning and interpreting evidence on chemicals issues so that the Environment Agency is able to support Defra in developing a chemicals strategy, influence policy, and inform its own regulatory response and that of other regulators, and voluntary initiatives

You will work across the Environment Agency and potentially with Defra and HSE.
You will be well organised and able to plan effectively and deliver within a project and matrix management structure. A technical background in analysing and presenting data and good communication skills to convey information to relevant audiences is essential. Experience in coding, statistical analysis, GIS mapping, manipulating EA data sets and working with other IT/data teams and processes are all relevant. An understanding of chemicals in the environment would help you engage with a wide range of technical experts on data interpretation and you should be prepared to develop your understanding in this area.

Technical skills required are:

• Proficient with R (essential)
• Experience with Shiny (desirable)
• Experience with collating and manipulating large datasets (essential)
• Experience with Markdown (desirable)
• Experience with ArcGIS (desirable)
• Experience with statistical analysis of data (desirable)
Our team has an inclusive culture. We value diversity and support work/life balance, and encourage applications from all interested candidates with the required skills and experience for the role.

The role may require regular travel, mainly to Bristol, Birmingham, and London. This may require overnight stays. However, currently, limited or no travel is expected in the foreseeable future as the organisations considers its safe systems of working.
This role covers a maternity leave

You are welcome to contact Isobel Bain Isobel.bain@environment-agency.gov.uk 07765221928 for an informal discussion about the role or any questions/concerns relevant to your application.

Interviews will be conducted via video call. Further information will be provided to candidates invited to interview. Interviews are expected to be on 3rd December, but this may change
