ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Current River Project Manager is responsible for implementing and managing all aspects of The Nature Conservancy's Current River Project to achieve sustainable conservation of priority targets in the project area.  The Project Manager will focus on sustainable conservation of priority riparian and aquatic landscapes as identified in Ecoregional and Project planning by developing and implementing strategies to abate ecosystem stresses and implement conservation practices in conjunction with a broad array of private and public partners and stakeholders.  The Project Manager will also assist with development and implementation of multi-site and multi-project strategies to conserve biodiversity across the Ozarks Ecoregion.

The Current River Project Manager is part of an interdisciplinary team involved in the development and implementation of appropriate conservation strategies to ensure biodiversity conservation in the Ozarks, and works with appropriate staff and partners to implement priority actions on critical lands and waters.  This position works independently and cooperatively with groups of diverse stakeholders and partners, including private landowners, government agencies, producer groups, and conservation organizations.  The Project Manager works closely with a diversity of appropriate TNC staff and other partners to identify and implement effective protection strategies integrated with economic and other considerations.

The Current River Project Manager is directly supervised by the Director of Conservation Science, and may supervise seasonal and long term staff and volunteers.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree and 3 years experience in natural resource or project management or equivalent combinations of education and experience
• Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
• Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, Web browsers, etc.
• Experience performing physical work.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
DUTIES:

• Develop and implement operational plans for the Current River Project, including development and administration of budgets and work plans.
• Work closely with a broad suite of partners and stakeholders to create support for the Conservancy’s conservation goals, including assisting Conservancy philanthropy staff with event support and communications needs.
• Identify and utilize diverse sources for financial and other resources in public and private sectors, including grant applications and foundation requests..
• Develop and nurture partnerships with key agencies and organizations, including U.S. Forest Service, Missouri Department of Conservation, National Park Service, Missouri Forest Products Association, and others to achieve leveraged conservation results for priority landscapes, watersheds, and conservation targets.  Establish and maintain regular communications with key agency and partner staff to facilitate freshwater conservation within the project area.
• Implement comprehensive land protection program, including negotiations for acquisition of critical lands, development of leveraged land conservation strategies including conservation easements and conservation buyer programs, and working with partners to provide landowner outreach for best management practices.
• Work closely with science and stewardship staff to provide close communications and relevant support for land management and field science activities with staff and partners.
• Ensure that program activities and needs are integrated with other Chapter and staff activities throughout the State and Ecoregion, ensuring effective timely communications with other staff as appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

• Bachelor’s degree, with extensive course work in agriculture, biology, forestry, natural resources management or related field and three years of related work experience. 
• Demonstrated communications and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate clearly with and engender support from diverse audiences and constituencies, building positive relationships that result in ongoing conservation benefits.
• Demonstrated capacity for leadership, including the ability to catalyze diverse coalitions to achieve priority conservation goals.
• Ability to conceptualize and implement on both strategic and operational scales, with proven entrepreneurial approach, creativity, and flexibility to develop best methods to achieve results, building to necessary scale.
• Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision, with strong personal commitment to achieving results; comfortable with multiple priorities and dynamic environment of shifting challenges and opportunities; strong organizational skills and follow-through of projects to completion.
• Thorough understanding of general principles of conservation and ecology, and natural resource based economies; familiarity with forestry, woodland landscapes, Ozark natural systems, river conservation issues, and rural culture helpful.
• Familiarity with real estate issues and practices.
• Strong personal commitment to conservation and science-based, market-focused approach to achieving conservation results.
• Valid US drivers license and safe driving record are required to operate Conservancy-owned vehicles to perform job duties.

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:

• Duties are performed under minimal supervision.  Consults with manager in event of any unusual circumstance, problem or question that falls outside of project parameters.
• Exercise independent judgement.  Work affords significant opportunity to act independently and make decisions within tight timeframes and under pressure.
• Work independently in an entrepreneurial environment; comfortable with ambiguity.
• Make sound decisions based on analysis, experience and judgement.


RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT –FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:

• May supervise administrative and conservation staff, interns, and volunteers, with responsibility for setting performance objectives, training and managing performance.
• Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.


COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

• Communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups including landowners, donors, board members, the public and others. 
• Work and communicate with a wide range of people from various backgrounds, including landowners with perspectives that may vary widely. 
• Ability to function productively as a member or leader of a team.


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

• Ability to work in variable weather conditions, remote locations and often in physically demanding circumstances. 
• Valid driver’s license, safe driving record, current insurance and reliable personal vehicle available for work use.
• Ability to work an irregular schedule including weekends and unpredicted schedule changes.
• Work requires occasional physical exertion and/or muscular strain.  Work involves several disagreeable elements and/or exposure to job hazards where there is some possibility of injury
