Position Description

Position Title: Curator of Birds, Education Program

Location: Velma Morrison Interpretive Center

Work Schedule: 
This is a full-time position requiring a flexible schedule to ensure that duties and responsibilities are met. There will be times of the year when more or less time will need to be spent at the facility, but a daily presence will be necessary because this position entails the care and feeding of live animals.

General Duties: 
The primary responsibility of this position will be to ensure proper maintenance, care, 
and training for all birds (currently 24) within the Education Program. This will include the daily feeding of birds and diet management, facility maintenance, cleaning, repair, maintaining falconry equipment, perches, etc.

Other duties will include:

  • Training raptors for specific programs (lure flying for October Flight Programs) and the handling of all manned raptors on a daily basis.
  • Working directly with staff and volunteers to assist with daily operations of the Interpretive Center.
  • Provide presentations with raptors for general public and interpret the birds to visitors.
  • Training staff and volunteers on bird handling, as needed.
  • Working with maintenance staff to build exhibits, perches, and other materials for use in the education program.

Qualifications: 
The applicant must be a neat, detail-oriented, organized, self-starter with an interest in joining an established program. This team player will need to have a strong desire to work with a wide variety of live raptors in different settings within an organization that is a leading international raptor conservation group. As such, care and maintenance of live raptors is highly scrutinized. Desired applicant should have a strong background in handling, training, and caring for raptors to include being an active falconer. Experience maintaining bio-security guidelines will be essential. Experience conducting interpretive programs for the general public is desirable, as well as developing interpretive programs with live birds for the general public. Desirable candidate will have exceptional interpersonal and organization skills and enjoy interacting with the public.

Additional Skills: 
Must have knowledge of general computer operation, including programs such as: 
Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and the Internet. 

Compensation: Full-time salary and benefits commensurate with experience (6 month probationary period). On-site housing may be available.  The Peregrine Fund is an equal opportunity employer.
