This challenging position requires a self-motivated, innovative and results-driven individual who will manage and continue to develop the world-class Free State National Botanical Garden by conserving its natural estate and associated biodiversity, cultivating and displaying appropriate living plant collections and interpreting them to improve the understanding and sustainable use of these plants, and their associated biodiversity, to the advancement of the region’s unique indigenous plant diversity.

The ideal candidate shall be in possession of a National Diploma in Horticulture or an equivalent qualification, supplemented by at least five years’ experience in a managerial position in an environmental management.

 

The Curator’s responsibilities will entail:

• developing and implementing a business plan for the Garden in line with SANBI’s Corporate Strategic Plan • displaying indigenous plant collections in the Garden in accordance with the highest botanical, horticultural and landscaping standards • developing and implementing effective financial and administrative management practices • ensuring high maintenance standards for all building infrastructure in the Garden • developing and implementing policies for the Garden aligned to the mission and policies of SANBI, as well as regularly reviewing the policies • supplying an efficient and friendly visitor service through the development of a quality customer service programme and the necessary training of staff • working together with SANBI’s Biodiversity Empowerment and Education Directorate to ensure that the Garden continues to serve as a useful resource for educational and nature-based tourism activities • managing conservation and horticultural research projects to further the potential use of southern African plants applicable to the region • implementing a marketing programme with all the relevant stakeholders to promote the assets of the Garden and to ensure that the Garden becomes a major area of focus for tourists and visitors alike • taking positive steps in ensuring that employees work in a healthy and safe environment and that the Garden’s activities comply with the Occupational Health & Safety Act • providing emergency services in the Garden • Stay in the Garden premises and work over the weekends.


SANBI offers an all-inclusive annual salary package of R378 456. It is a requirement that the candidate shall live in the official residence on the premises and perform after hour duties on a roaster basis.
