ScopeThe Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) has been demonstrating ecologically sustainable methods and technology to the public from its 40-acre site in the hills of West Wales for 35 years. It aims to inspire, inform and enable society to move towards a more sustainable future. The Centre is managed along cooperative principles.The Course Department is currently in an exciting expansion phase. Work started in 2006 on a £6.5 million educational complex - The Wales Institute for Sustainable Education (WISE). Completion is expected mid 2009.The department currently has a dynamic team of 11 including the Course Director, Assistant Course Director, Short Course Administrator and Marketing Officer, 4 Post Graduate Administrators, Course Technician, WISE Events Manager and cleaner (part time). In addition, the Graduate School of the Environment has 20 academic staff and 3 PhD students. There is a full residential programme running throughout the year generating an income of approximately £2m. CAT owns 13 acres of woodland across the road from the main site. Currently we are developing a range of new courses, which will be based in the woodland.This is a full time, 5-day week (40 hours) post. It will involve working some weekends and evenings on a rota basis.
Responsibilities
i.to prepare for practical courses; to liaise with teaching staff, purchase materials and be responsible for practical workshop areas, including tools and equipmentii.to assist with compliance of Health and Safety regulations iii.to maintain technical equipment (e.g.computers and projectors) and liaise with teaching staff re visual aid requirements iv.to assist teaching staff in the running of technical/practical workshopsv.to give general introductory talks and technical guided tours of CAT as requiredvi.on a rota basis, to prepare for and host residential courses, including preparing rooms, greeting participants, liaising with lecturers, photocopying lecture notes, preparing equipment and generally troubleshootingvii.to have a working knowledge of administrative systems as an occasional back up to the Course Administratorviii.to undertake specific projects as directed by the Course Directorix .to work with the Courses Team to develop and expand the residential course programme Co-operative Responsibilitiesi.to attend staff and other meetings as required and assist other Courses colleagues in their cooperative management duties.ii.to undertake cooperative rota duties.iii.to comply with health and safety requirements.iv.to undertake any other duties as requested by the elected Management Group, Overview.
