Description

Country Programme Manager, Nicaragua
Fauna & Flora International

Salary: Negotiable and dependent on qualifications and experience
Start Date: May/June 2013
Duration of contract: Open
Location: Managua, Nicaragua

Founded in 1903, Fauna & Flora International (FFI) is the world’s longest-established international conservation organisation. Our vision is to create a sustainable future for the planet where biodiversity is conserved by the people living closest to it. We aim to do this through the conservation of threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science and take account of human needs.  We have become a trusted entity in the world of conservation. Today FFI is active in over 40 countries.

The FFI Americas & Caribbean Programme works to deliver the organisation’s mission in the wider Caribbean and Latin America. With a regional base in Cambridge, the programme has teams in Nicaragua, Ecuador and Brazil, and partner organisations in a dozen countries throughout the region, including the Caribbean.

With a focus on landscape and habitat level conservation, FFI’s Americas & Caribbean Programme uses charismatic ‘flagship’ species to communicate and address conservation concerns, and assists with livelihood interventions that will make conservation relevant to local people, providing a greater chance of sustainability. The programme is working to conserve globally important habitats including dry forest, lowland Chocó and Amazonian forest, as well as near shore marine habitats in the eastern tropical Pacific and Caribbean. We work in both disturbed and untouched areas where there is high biodiversity or
cultural value.

FFI has been active in Nicaragua since 1998, collaborating with a range of stakeholders from Nicaraguan government institutions to local non-governmental organisations and many local communities to support the management of protected areas and their surrounding environments. The programme seeks to implement locally appropriate solutions to conserve endangered habitats including dry forest, the island of Ometepe and marine environments, as well as focusing on threatened
species such as marine turtles.  The projects take a holistic approach and the solutions aim to understand and address the needs and rights of the local communities who are directly involved in or impacted by the conservation actions.

FFI is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Country Programme Manager to direct and manage FFI’s programme in Nicaragua, in line with FFI’s mission and vision for the Americas & Caribbean, leading strategic planning and programme development, managing staff and partnerships, and raising donor funds to finance the programme.

The successful applicant will have a Master’s degree with a minimum of eight years’ experience in the fields of conservation and international development. S/he will have proven organisational and leadership skills, and will enjoy working in a dynamic environment where the ability to respond swiftly to challenges and opportunities is paramount. Spoken fluency in English and Spanish is essential, as are excellent writing skills in at least one language. This position is based in FFI’s office in Managua, Nicaragua with international travel as required.
