JOB DESCRIPTION - SUMMARY
Background
The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is an international NGO with consultative status with the United Nations working to raise the standards of animal welfare globally. As the world’s largest federation of animal protection organisations, WSPA works in partnership with more than 1000 member societies in over 145 countries. Through its campaigns, education, training and animal rescue initiatives, WSPA works to ensure that the principles of animal welfare are universally understood and respected.
Job Title : Country Director – WSPA, CHINA
Location : Beijing (WSPA CHINA)
Reporting to : Regional Director-Asia Pacific
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Meeting strategic objectives for China as set out in the WSPA global strategic map and associated strategies related to programmes to improve animal welfare and develop WSPA as a robust global organisation.
a. To directly contribute to all of WSPA’s strategic planning with a particular focus on how those strategies develop in the region.
b. To promote a commitment to ‘one WSPA’ by ensuring the country works within agreed/delegated global policy and operational frameworks - related to all aspects of WSPA’s work and its effectiveness - with the support and input from WSPA’s International teams (on issues like brand, HR, fundraising, finance, reporting, etc)
c. Collaboration with strategic campaign leaders and their teams in the development of the strategy for WSPA’s animal welfare programmes
d. Working in line with agreed strategies, to liaise with government authorities, organisations and media in the country.
2. To lead and develop Country staff
a. Recruit, develop and support staff to high levels of performance
b. Ensure effective management of change in the country
c. Work directly with and through the International Operations Management Team (OMT) as appropriate to support and inform work in the country.
3. To be a spokesperson for WSPA in your country
a. leading/joining negotiations with and presenting to high level contacts in government, international institutions, other INGOs and NGOs and the media
4. To ensure the WSPA operation in your country is legally compliant and adopts a due diligence approach to its work
a. To work with accredited legal representatives to review and implement legal frameworks in China with which you would be required to adhere to.
5. Budgets and Financial Management
a. To manage the preparation of annual budgets
b. Ensure that finance strategy is being adhered to and finance systems are in place
c. Oversees monthly financial reporting and annual audit
d. Monitors cash flow and ensures expenses do not exceed budgets

3. Experience
a. Leadership experience in and a commitment to animal welfare
b. Drive and enthusiasm to achieve WSPA’s mission and vision in China
c. An excellent communicator internally, at all levels of an organisation. Specifically, An effective team player with a successful track record of working in senior teams in a range of organisations
d. An excellent communicator externally with a proven track record at all levels and in a range of environments (national and regional governments, media – broadcast, print and online - business, international institutions
e. An expert negotiator. You should have a track record of success in securing a measurable impact/benefit from presentations, meetings and negotiations you have led/taken a significant role in.
f. Excellent in both written and spoken English with a proven track record of producing written materials that make a clear and fully supported case for action which enables projects to progress and decisions to be made
g. International experience – specifically operating successfully in a multi cultural/national environment including working with people in different countries (desirable)
h. Experience of working in the not for profit sector
i. High level IT skills for efficient production of written reports, emails, etc
j. Proven track record in developing, managing and analysing complex income and expenditure budgets including proficiency in the use of Excel spreadsheets

a. Willing to regularly travel internationally
b. A commitment to the WSPA mission
