POSITION SUMMARY
The Upper Peninsula Invasives Council (UPIC) Coordinator will take the lead on formalizing UPIC into a Cooperative Weed Management Area in the Central Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The successful candidate will also organize volunteers in local communities to assist with the invasive plants removal, train volunteers to lead future invasives control efforts, and map existing invasive species populations. The job requires the ability to work independently along with the ability to work with, train and oversee volunteers. The job also requires significant amounts of travel due to the dispersed nature of the work sites.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
-  Research and apply for grant opportunities.
-  Formalize current and potential partners into the Central UP Cooperative Weed Management
   Area.
-  Present workshops to the general public about invasive species.
-  Conduct invasive plant removal and mapping at designated sites in the central UP.
-  Recruit and train volunteers in invasives removal techniques, and supervise volunteers
   during workdays.
-  Organize and present field data with the use of GPS, ArcPad, ArcMap, and TNC’s WIMS data
   management tool.
-  Update and maintain quarterly newsletter and UPIC website.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
-  Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and 2
   years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
-  Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. 
-  Experience coordinating multiple projects.
-  Experience handling standard business communications.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
-  B.S. in biological sciences or natural resources with successful natural resources work
   experience in the field, OR combination of successful natural resources work experience in
   the field and college course work in biological sciences or natural resources.
-  Experience with grant writing.
-  Strong written and verbal communication skills.
-  Experience with GPS and GIS (ArcMap/ArcPad/ArcView).
-  Familiarity with Michigan flora and fauna, especially invasive plant species.
-  Experience overseeing volunteers.
-  Ability to work without direct day-to-day supervision .S /He must be able to work independently
   and accomplish the job requirements in an efficient manner.
-  Valid Driver's License

COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:
-  Consults with supervisor to resolve any problems or questions.
-  May resolve minor problems independently as delegated.

DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
-  Consults with supervisor in event of any unusual circumstance, problem or question that falls
   outside of specific instructions given.
-  Make day-to-day decisions as delegated by supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT -FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:
-  Supervises no staff; no financial responsibility.
-  Will supervise volunteers regularly.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
-  Ability to interact with members of the public and to convey basic information about the
   organization and current projects.
-  Ability to work with and lead volunteers and provide training in invasive species removal.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
-  Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on
   difficult and sometimes hazardous terrain. Work environment involves exposure to job
   hazards where there is a moderate possibility of injury.
-  Work environment is often very remote, with limited access to emergency services.
-  Extensive travel is required for this position, and irregular hours are common.
