Rebuilding tropical fisheries with coastal communities Blue Ventures develops transformative approaches for nurturing and sustaining locally led marine conservation. We work in places where the ocean is vital to local cultures and economies, and we are committed to protecting marine biodiversity in ways that benefit coastal people. Summary Job DescriptionMadagascar contains some of the largest coral reef systems in the western Indian Ocean, supporting small-scale fisheries that underpin food security and coastal economies for hundreds of thousands of people. The past decade has seen an acceleration of severe anthropogenic threats to the country’s reefs, coinciding with a groundswell of support for community-led marine conservation nationwide. However there is a paucity of published information documenting medium-term trends in the status of the island’s coral reefs. We are currently looking to recruit a coral reef ecologist with a strong background in multivariate statistical analysis and science communications, to analyse available data from some of the country’s longest-standing coral reef monitoring programmes. This position will analyse data, and prepare scientific reports on status and trends in coral reef health from monitoring sites in southwest Madagascar. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, experienced marine ecologist with an excellent knowledge of Indo-Pacific coral reef fauna, as well as a proven track record of peer reviewed publication. You will thrive in environments that are dynamic, fast-paced, collegiate and ambitious, and be able to demonstrate experience working independently and solving complex problems in challenging environments. The role entails working as part of an interdisciplinary and international team, with opportunities for professional development. The position will report to Blue Ventures’ Monitoring and Evaluation Manager who is based in our Bristol office in the UK. Application processFor more information and details on how to apply, please see the job description. The application form can be downloaded here. Applicants should submit a completed application form, recent CV (including full telephone and email contact details of three professional referees), and cover letter relating to this position vacancy to jobs@blueventures.org. Please include the reference “coral reef ecologist” in the subject line. The closing date for applications is 24th January 2016 (midnight GMT). |
