The Coral Triangle area: including Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Timor Leste, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands is home to the world’s most diverse marine life.   The Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) is a collective effort by these six coral triangle countries (CT6) and numerous partner agencies to enhance the conservation of these globally outstanding marine resources. 

The CTI has worked with the six countries to develop both a Regional Plan of Action (RPOA) and National Plans of Action (NPOA). These plans are organized around five goals: Seascapes, Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM), Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), and Threatened Species with thematic working groups established for each goal.

Conservation International (CI) is mobilizing significant resources to support goal one of the RPOA, Seascapes. As a tool to achieve integrated large-scale marine management Seascapes offer the most effective way affect change at a multi-national and regional scale. CI’s engagement will center on the thematic Seascapes Working Group (SWG) focusing on two areas:

  • Establishing a general model for sustainable management of seascapes
  • Supporting seascape capacity-building and learning

To add capacity in support of this engagement CI is looking to hiring a part-time CTI Coordinator. This position will work with the Senior Director of Coral Reefs, Fisheries & Food Security, Coral Triangle Initiative Program Manager, Global Marine Division (GMD) Technical Advisor, and GMD Coordinator all based in Honolulu, Hawaii. The CTI Coordinator will be supervised by and take their programmatic direction from CTI Manager The coordinator will work with the other CTI and GMD staff in a teaming approach in which they will not supervise other staff but instead work collaboratively to assist them to complete needed tasks to advance CI’s objectives under the Seascapes goal.

 

Working Conditions:

  • The position will be based in Honolulu, Hawaii
  • This is a part time position, working 60% (21 hours per week)

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in marine science/biology/ecology/natural resource management or other relevant skills with at least 3 years experience working in either in marine/coastal resources management programs or in implementation of conservation projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must,
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)
  • Strong understanding of marine natural resource management
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks
  • Ability to write reports and proposals
  • Experience in generating a range of communications materials (web-based, print, audio/visual, etc)
  • Experience working in the Coral Triangle Countries is an advantage
  • Natural Resource Policy experience in the context of the Coral Triangle countries
  • Good interpersonal skills and innovative thinking
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a wide range of geographically dispersed individuals and within teams representing different organizations or constituencies.
  • Proficient in operating computer software, i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, etc as well as the internet
