Conservation International is working to transform the coffee sector to sustainable production by working in collaboration with corporate, government and NGO partners in the Sustainable Coffee Challenge, working one-on-one with corporations on sustainable sourcing programs and investment strategies, and working with CI field programs to design and implement programs that demonstrate the ability to transition coffee production to sustainable systems.

The Coordinator will support the work of the Sustainable Coffee Challenge by organizing events, coordinating working group meetings, taking and distributing notes from meetings and conducting research to ensure effective coordination of the Sustainable Coffee Challenge. The Coordinator will also support the Coffee Program in research and analysis that contributes to successful partnerships with major coffee retailers, roasters and traders. The position will also coordinate a coffee network within CI that engages field programs as well as our HQ divisions working on coffee to ensure coordination and sharing of opportunities and lessons learned.  Finally, the position will coordinate and support operational management of the Strategic Initiatives team. 

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Support communication and engagement of the Sustainable Coffee Challenge by scheduling meetings, coordinating events, coordinating working groups, ensuring participant lists are up to date, manage process for responding to inquiries about the challenge, assist in development of meeting materials, etc.
  • Conduct research and analysis in support of our corporate partnerships with coffee traders, roasters and retailers as well as the Sustainable Coffee Challenge
  • Coordinate a coffee network that ensures clear communication and sharing of lessons learned across CI’s coffee-related projects.
  • Support the administration, financial management, annual planning and overall coordination of the Strategic Initiatives team
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (international development, agronomy, business administration, conservation biology, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • 2-5 years’ experience working in the coffee sector and sustainability issues
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, diverse, cross-cultural environment
  • Highly developed ability to synthesize and communicate information to businesses and other stakeholder groups
  • Experience assisting in the development concepts, proposals  and agreements
  • Experience supporting the administration of contracts and grants
  • Experience assisting in the development of and management of program budgets

Preferred:

  • Experience working in the field with coffee producers on sustainability projects
  • Ability to work in Spanish, Japanese, Chinese or Bahasa Indonesia

Working Conditions: 

This position is located in the Arlington, Virginia HQ office. The Coordinator will travel internationally and domestically to support the Coffee Program (<10% of time).
