To aid its conservation efforts, the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program (NHESP) in West Boylston, Massachusetts, is looking for intensive seasonal assistance in conducting Blanding’s Turtle surveys in 2013. The Blanding’s Turtle is listed as Threatened in Massachusetts.

With special funding for this project, the surveyor will: help plan and coordinate field surveys; perform visual surveys using binoculars; set up and check hoop traps; follow a standardized sampling protocol to collect data; compile, organize and enter data; and assist in preparation of a summary report. Preferred qualifications include: Master’s degree in biology, wildlife, conservation biology, or related field; familiarity and field experience with aquatic turtles, particularly Blanding’s Turtles; and knowledge of rare flora and fauna of Massachusetts. Preference will go to applicants experienced with ArcGIS and GPS technology; ability to interpret topographic maps and aerial photographs; ability to work both collaboratively and independently; good communication skills; accuracy and attention to detail; and the ability to work under strenuous field conditions. 

The services of the Blanding’s Turtle surveyor will be retained through the Natural Heritage Program’s contractual relationship with the Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences. One full-time opportunity will run from approximately early April through early July. Most survey sites will be in the northeastern part of the state with 1-2 in the south shore area. The surveyor must be willing to work in both regions and have their own transportation. No housing is available.
