Description

The UNDP Project #00062795 “Sustainable Development at Local Level”, funded by the European Commission, was launched 6 November 2008. It is jointly implemented by UNDP Belarus and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus (Ministry of Environment).

The project aims to develop priorities in rural and environmentally friendly tourism that will favorably influence on environment and create prerequisites for sustainable development of rural areas, including LA21 development and implementation. The project foresees development of agro- and ecotourism based on the Greenways concept.

In order to increase the Belarusian expertise in Greenways implementation and support those regions that have decided to invest in Greenways elaboration, the project will conduct training of staff in organizations that will provide technical advice on the preparation of Greenways projects in Belarus. The representatives of the Ministry of Environment and other organizations (to be defined) within project implementation will be trained.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will be required to make one trip to Minsk for participation in the training (July-August 2010) on Greenways creation and development in Belarus. She/He will work in close cooperation with the project team and will be responsible for development of a detailed three-days training course on Greenways development.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Assemble a training programme and informational handouts:
  • - on the basis of international experience in the field of Greenways development (foreign concepts, official documents, best practices) and in cooperation with the Thematic Consultant on Greenways prepare a program of 1-day training for the imitative groups on Greenways development and provide it for approval to the Task Coordinator (LA21-Greenways) of the project;
  • - prepare informational handouts and training materials (at least, 10 pages, A4 format) in cooperation with the Thematic Consultant on Greenways and provide them in electronic form to the Task Coordinator (LA21-Greenways) for approval;
  • Prepare the following presentations for their delivery during the training in line with the approved programme:
  • Sustainable development of tourist routes in the country (cultural, gastronomic, natural routes), based on the best international practices and experience. Methods of their development in Italia and other countries.
  • Greenways created on the basis of local cultural and natural heritage based on the best examples that could be implemented in Belarus
  • Methods of Greenways promotion on national and international experience adopted for Belarusian conditions.
  • Holding a training on Greenways:
  • deliver above mentioned presentations;
  • organize the thematic groups’ work using interactive methods;
  • facilitate group discussions/debates within the training, serve as a resource person for the discussions/debates;
  • examination of the results of the Greenways potential assessment in one of four pilot regions, chosen for the Greenway’s creation, including consultations according it’s map, signboard and logo; 
  • Preparation of report and recommendations on Greenways development:
  • prepare a report on training and recommendations on Greenways development in a pilot region:
  • best international (especially Italian) practices of Greenways creation that could be implemented in Belarus or adopted for it’s conditions;
  • methods of Greenways development in Italia and other countries that could be used in Belarus;
  • new ways of Greenways development taking into account local cultural and natural heritage;
  • practical recommendations for Greenways development in pilot region which was examined and where the seminar “Greenways: from inception to implementation” was held.
Deliverables:

Output 1 (2 working days):

  • The training Program and handouts on Greenways training are prepared and coordinated with the Task Coordinator (LA21&Greenways) (at least, 10 pages, A4 format; 3 presentations are prepared). The length of the presentations – approximately 30-40 minutes.

Output 2 (1 working day):

  • Greenways training using interactive methods is held, 3 presentations are displayed during the training (the presentations are prepared in PowerPoint or web formats and transferred for distribution it on the project’s website).

Output 3 (1 working day):

Recommendations for the development of map, logo and signboard of the Greenway based on the results of examination are agreed on with the thematic coordinator.

  • The Expert will directly report to the Task Coordinator (LA21/Greenways).
  • All reports should be in the English, or the Russian language and be provided in MS Office electronic format.

 

Competencies

  • Perfect analytical and organizational skills;
  • Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, e-mail);
  • Good knowledge of English or Russian.

 

Required Skills and Experience

  • University degree in the field of tourism, cultural and natural heritage, natural sciences, preferably in the field of ecotourism.
  • At least, 5 years of work experience in the field of tourism, cultural and natural heritage, natural sciences, preferably in the field of ecotourism;
  • Experience in international projects, connected with thematic routes is an advantage;
  • At least, 5 years of work experience in the field of Greenways in Eastern European countries is an advantage.
