Conservation Training Program Officer

Position Purpose:

The Conservation Training Program Officer oversees training and leadership programs at White Oak.   The position coordinates the development and management of White Oak’s professional training and leadership programs, including the management of the Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders (EWCL) program.

White Oak Leadership Training:

The Program Officer reports to White Oak’s Director of Conservation Education to develop and implement conservation leadership and training programs.  In recognition of the crucial need to integrate conservation thinking, training and leadership across a variety of sectors including business, health, government and conservation, White Oak is developing leadership training applications based on the success of the EWCL leadership model.  The Program Officer will work closely with the Director of Conservation Education to implement and develop resources to ensure success and growth of the conservation leadership and training programs at White Oak.  The Program Officer is responsible for managing all logistical and coordination aspects of professional training and will seek funding to support the program.

The Program Officer will support the education department through participation in all facets of the professional training programs including, but not limited to, developing and delivering training programs, courses and workshops, developing and monitoring key performance and program metrics, communicating with internal departments and external partners, and marketing of training programs.  

EWCL:

The EWCL initiative addresses a long-standing need for capable leaders in the conservation field who are equipped with a full arsenal of skills to launch well-rounded and effective conservation campaigns and build successful leadership careers in the wildlife conservation profession.  EWCL does this through a two-year training program that helps jump-start early career conservation professionals with a combination of skills trainings, networking and career mentorship opportunities, and the planning, implementation and evaluation of tangible wildlife conservation projects.

The Program Officer is responsible for managing all logistical and coordination aspects of EWCL, seeking funding for EWCL through foundation and other revenue sources, and serving as liaison to the EWCL Board, funders, participants and alumni.  The Program Officer reports to White Oak’s Director of Conservation Education and EWCL Board co-chairs, to carry out job duties and functions.   

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

White Oak Professional Training Programs

  • Create and manage professional leadership and training programs: internships, residencies, courses, conferences, and workshops.  Develop and monitor key performance metrics and analytics to measure the success of training efforts.
  • Develop White Oak network of partners and organizations to grow White Oak training programs.
  • Coordinate training course and workshop/conference logistics, including registration, presentation, and materials support and pre-and post-event evaluations.
  • Work closely with White Oak development program to coordinate strategies and raise funds for training programs and related education efforts.
  • Manage orientation program for interns and residents.
  • Market available training opportunities through external outlets.
  • Maintain updated training records.
  • Design and prepare educational aids and materials.
  • As needed, assist in delivering education programming and instruction for all White Oak audiences: K-12, college, and adult.
  • Work with White Oak managers and Human Resources Department to assist with the implementation of training/education programs for the White Oak team.
  • Prepare and manage training budgets.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned                      

Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders Program

  • Recruits EWCL participants on bi-annual basis and provides the EWCL board with synthesized list of applicants.
  • Carries out all logistical needs for annual EWCL trainings, including lodging, meal and flight needs for speakers and participants, necessary paperwork for international participants and creating training evaluations.
  • Develops agenda for trainings, including securing Board and other trainers.  
  • Compiles binders and all materials necessary for trainings.
  • Analyzes evaluations from trainings to share with board and donors.
  • Coordinates annual EWCL board meetings. 
  • Coordinates board working groups.
  • In consultation with the Board, establishes training objectives.
  • Seeks funding opportunities through Foundations and other funders, writes grants and provides reports to funders.
  • Prepares training summaries, along with any necessary reports for funders.
  • Coordinates alumni and out-side training session professional growth opportunities for participants and alumni.
  • Researches and prepares EWCL class projects prior to selection, and serves as a liaison for all projects working closely with the teams and the project partner groups.
  • Oversees EWCL budget.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education:  Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in related discipline.
  • Experience:  3+ years of experience in wildlife conservation program work and/or environmental education.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

  • Analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills with the ability to function independently and as part of a team
  • Strong knowledge of wildlife conservation issues
  • Ability to make sound decisions based on analysis, experience, and judgment
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and occasional overnights
  • Willingness to travel, both domestically and internationally
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED adult and pediatric certification
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license
  • Candidates must submit and pass a Level II background check and submit an affidavit of good moral character (Florida Department of Children and Families)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Candidates must be able to lift 50 lbs. without difficulty, work in adverse weather conditions, and remain on their feet for long periods of time.
