Description

About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Overview:

With global biodiversity in rapid decline and a growing number of species on the brink of extinction, advances in technology are becoming ever more important in helping us to solve these conservation challenges. ZSL is working with a range of expert partners to design, develop, manufacture and deploy innovative and integrated technological tools that will revolutionise wildlife surveillance, biodiversity monitoring and behaviour change through digital communications. ZSL is one of the leading conservation organisations pushing innovation in this field. The team were the first to deliver a real-time satellite enable anti-poaching alarm system, (Instant Detect) an open source animal tracker (Mataki) and software to engage the public to analyse camera trap data (Instant Wild), alongside innovative public engagement platforms such as the #wearetherangers Minecraft experience with United for Wildlife.

These technologies may be developed and deployed directly by ZSL or shared/sold with trusted third party organisations. Conservation Technology aims to deploy open source solutions that solve conservation problems and share these with the wider community, to increase capabilities worldwide.

This has driven ZSL to seek a Technical Delivery Specialist to join the Conservation Technology Unit to provide specialist expertise in the pitching, planning and delivery of technical solutions to help address some of the most pressing issues threatening biodiversity and the planet.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Working with ZSL Conservation Programme Managers and Country Managers to design and implement technology that supports their large-scale conservation projects around the world.

  • Leading the planning and development of large scale projects ranging from £500K – £1.5m.

  • Develop technical strategies and roadmaps to support funding applications, project planning and delivery.

  • Providing remote and/or on-the-ground support for the implementation of technology in the field.

  • Supporting the research and testing of new technologies that address conservation challenges.

  • Contributing to the inception of new technology ideas, initiating new avenues to explore and meeting technical partners to build on existing solutions.

Ideally the successful candidate will be:
  • Educated to bachelor degree or equivalent in a related discipline or have equivalent level of work experience

  • Passionate about innovation and the potential of technology to change the way we address issues threatening our planet.

  • Demonstrate specialist expertise in the deployment and management of technical solutions

  • Able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of software and hardware best practice and excel at communicating technical complexity with third parties to advance ZSL's reputation as a leader in the field.

  • Independently driven and able to take initiative; with strong administrative skills.

  • Excellent communicator, proficient with proposal and report writing and building relationships at senior levels.

Please Note: The position is based at ZSL’s offices in London Regents Park but may involve significant travel abroad to remote field sites to assist in trials and implementation of tools. The position may also require weekend and out of office hours.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a fun and talented team with start-up mentality and an opportunity to define and drive forward your own projects.

Benefits package including: 25 days annual leave, stakeholder pension, complimentary zoo tickets plus more!
