The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is a private, non-profit organization that prides itself on its entrepreneurial, science-based approach to achieving conservation success through direct action. Since 1962, NCC and its supporters have protected more than 2.6 million acres (1 million hectares) of ecologically significant land across Canada. NCC has experienced dramatic growth in recent years, and is now listed as the 13th largest non-profit organization in Canada, with a national office in Toronto and seven regional offices across the country.
Purpose and General Description:
The Conservation Technician (CT) works closely with the Conservation Biologist (CB) to support conservation programs in the NCC subregion of Midwestern Ontario. They will contribute to the stewardship, management and administration of NCC properties throughout Midwestern Ontario.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Conservation Technician will assist in the implementation of the stewardship and management program for significant natural lands protected by NCC in Ontario, by working closely with NCC staff, partner conservation organizations, and local stewards and volunteers.

Specific Responsibilities
- Site reconnaissance work, including baseline inventories and vegetation community classification;
- Monitoring of biodiversity targets and threats on NCC properties and conducting annual inspections to ensure early detection and management of natural disturbances, vandalism, trespassing, emerging threats, and risks and liabilities;
- Implementation of recommended stewardship and management actions on NCC properties, including, but not limited to: invasive species monitoring and removal, trail and fence maintenance, volunteer events, landowner and partner organization contact and installing signage; and,
- Assistance with the data entry, analysis and reporting required to develop and implement property management plans for NCC properties, and other office duties as required.
Required Skills and Attributes:
This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills:
- Currently enrolled in or graduated from post-secondary program in ecology, conservation biology or related discipline;
- Excellent plant and vegetation community identification skills;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Navigational skills including experience with field GPS unit, compass, and/or air photo interpretation;
- Prepared to travel overnight throughout the program area (occasionally for a week or more at a time), and work flexible hours;
- Demonstrated ability to work outdoors for extended periods and under various weather conditions (e.g. temperature and precipitation extremes) and terrains;
- Experience/knowledge implementing solutions to management issues on conservation lands;
- Highly motivated, reliable, flexible and detail oriented;
- Ability to work well within team structure;
- Demonstrated interest in environmental issues, preferably in natural history and land conservation;
- Experience/knowledge compiling information on natural areas, including land tenure, natural features, threats etc.;
- Experience working with volunteers, partner organizations and/or landowners;
- Valid class “G” driver’s license or equivalent,? and ability to rent a vehicle in Ontario;
- Proficient with word processing, and spreadsheet software; familiarity with database applications is an asset;
- Experience/knowledge of the Ecological Land Classification for Southern Ontario and Ontario Natural Heritage Information Centre databases would be an asset; and
- Up to date First Aid training is an asset.

- $15.75/hour
- Positions are based out of Guelph but will involve travel throughout Midwestern Ontario. This requires the ability to travel to and into field sites and includes overnights away from the home city. Travel expenses will be reimbursed; personal vehicle not required.
