The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is a private, non-profit organization that prides itself on its entrepreneurial, science-based approach to achieving conservation success through direct action. Since 1962, NCC and its supporters have protected more than 2.6 million acres (1 million hectares) of ecologically significant land across Canada. NCC has experienced dramatic growth in recent years, and is now listed as the 13th largest non-profit organization in Canada, with a national office in Toronto and seven regional offices across the country.
Purpose and General Description:
The Conservation Technician (CT) works closely with the Conservation Biologist (CB) and Assistant Conservation Biologist (ACB) to support conservation programs in the NCC subregion of Eastern Ontario. They will contribute to the stewardship, management and administration of NCC properties throughout Eastern Ontario.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Conservation Technician will assist in the implementation of the stewardship and management program for significant natural lands protected by NCC in Ontario, by working closely with NCC staff, partner conservation organizations, and local stewards and volunteers.

- Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada.
Specific Responsibilities
- Site reconnaissance work, including baseline inventories and vegetation community classification;
- Compliance monitoring of conservation easements;
- Effectiveness monitoring of biodiversity targets and threats on NCC properties, including invasive species monitoring, lake monitoring and population monitoring
- Monitoring of element occurrences, nested targets and rare species and communities;
- Documentation of invasive species occurrences on NCC properties;
- Annual inspections to ensure early detection and management of natural disturbances, vandalism, trespass, emerging threats, and risks and liabilities;
- Reporting field results in NCC?s Land Information System database
- Implementation of recommended stewardship and management actions on NCC properties, including, but not limited to, invasive species removal, trail and fence maintenance, sign installation, volunteer events and landowner contact; and,
- Assistance in the development and writing of property management plans, easement monitoring reports, effectiveness monitoring reporting and other office duties as required
Required Skills and Attributes:
This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills:
- Experience working in a field setting, including hands-on work, carrying heavy loads, manual labour and being a good team player;
- Excellent identification skills, particularly regarding plants, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds;
- Navigational skills including experience with field GPS unit, compass, and map;
- Attention to detail;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Ability to work long hours and carry a heavy pack;
- Experience/knowledge implementing solutions to management issues on conservation lands;
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and under various weather conditions (e.g. temperature and precipitation extremes) and terrains
- Highly motivated, creative, pro-active thinker;
- Ability to work both independently and within a team structure;
- Proficient with word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheet software;
- Valid class “G” driver’s license and ability to rent a vehicle in Ontario;
- Experience/knowledge compiling information on natural areas, including land tenure, natural features, threats etc.;
- Experience working with volunteers;
- Experience/knowledge of the Ecological Land Classification for Southern Ontario and Ontario Natural Heritage Information Centre databases would be an asset.
- Up to date First Aid training is an asset

- $15.75/hour
- Positions are based out of Ottawa but will involve travel throughout Eastern Ontario. This requires the ability to travel to and into field sites and includes overnights away from the home city. Travel expenses will be reimbursed; personal vehicle not required.
