Description

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is a private, non-profit organization that prides itself on its entrepreneurial, science-based approach to achieving conservation success through direct action. Purpose and General Description:

The Conservation Technician (CT) works closely with the Conservation Biologist (CB) to support conservation programs in the NCC subregion of Central Ontario. They will contribute to the stewardship, management and administration of NCC properties throughout Central Ontario.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Conservation Technician will assist in the implementation of the stewardship and management program for significant natural lands protected by NCC in Ontario, by working closely with NCC staff, partner conservation organizations, and local stewards and volunteers.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Annual monitoring and reporting field results into NCC?s Land Information System database
  • Assistance with seed collecting, planting, invasive species removal, installation of fences, signs and barriers and outreach, including Conservation Volunteer events;
  • Field data collection as required;
  • Site reconnaissance work, including baseline inventories and vegetation community classification;
  • Compliance monitoring of conservation easements;
  • Effectiveness monitoring of biodiversity targets and threats on NCC properties and annual inspections to ensure early detection and management of natural disturbances, vandalism, trespassing, emerging threats, and risks and liabilities;
  • Implementation of recommended stewardship and management actions on NCC properties, including, but not limited to, invasive species monitoring and removal, trail and fence maintenance, volunteer events, landowner contact and installing signage; and,
  • Assistance in the development and writing of property management plans, easement monitoring reports, effectiveness monitoring reporting and other office duties as required

Required Skills and Attributes:

This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills:

  • Ability to work in field setting, completing hands-on stewardship activities such as installing fencing, carrying heavy equipment and materials, planting (up to thousands of seed plugs or trees at a time) and applying herbicides
  • Experience/knowledge compiling information on natural areas, including land tenure, natural features, threats etc.;
  • Familiar with the identification and methods for collecting tallgrass prairie seeds
  • Familiar with vegetation community identification;
  • Navigational skills including experience with field GPS unit, compass, and/or air photo interpretation
  • Experience/knowledge implementing solutions to management issues on conservation lands;
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and under various weather conditions (e.g. temperature and precipitation extremes) and terrains
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Highly motivated, analytical and detail oriented; creative, pro-active thinker;
  • Ability to work well within team structure;
  • Proficient with word processing, desktop publishing, and spreadsheet software;
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental issues, preferably in natural history and land conservation;
  • Valid class “G” driver’s license;
  • Experience working with volunteers;
  • Experience/Knowledge of the Ecological Land Classification for Southern Ontario and Ontario Natural Heritage Information Centre databases would be an asset;
  • Up to date First Aid training is an asset;
  • Pesticide exterminator’s license would be a key asset

Terms of Employment

  • Monday, April 29, 2013 - Friday, October 25, 2013
  • $15.75/hour
  • Positions are based out of Peterborough but will involve travel throughout Central Ontario. This requires the ability to travel to and into field sites and includes overnights away from the home city. Travel expenses will be reimbursed; personal vehicle not required.
