Position Summary TPL seeks a Program Associate for our Conservation Economics and Conservation Vision Programs. The Program Associate will split their time between the two programs. The Conservation Economics Program demonstrates the economic benefits of land conservation programs at the local, state, and federal levels. Through Conservation Vision, TPL helps agencies and communities define conservation priorities, identify lands to be protected, and plan networks of conserved land that meet public need. The position is responsible for supporting the Director of Conservation Economics in Boston and the Associate Director of Conservation Vision in San Francisco.
Essential Functions
Conservation Economics
- Supports Conservation Economics Program with research on the economic impacts of land conservation.
- Gathers original data (e.g., from state agency staff) and information from existing materials (e.g., journal articles and government reports) on the economic benefits of land conservation.
- Organizes data in preparation for analysis.
- Evaluates data and effectively communicate results to Director of Conservation Economics.
- Develops draft written products.
Conservation Vision
- Supports Conservation Vision program in research and writing on the following types of programs and initiatives: conservation planning, green infrastructure, ecosystem services, smart growth, and land and water connections.
- Conducts research and writes reports related to communities with whom we are working.
- Supports teams in completing project work plans, including scheduling calls, site visits, and internet-based meetings.
- Assists with interviews, community surveys, and stakeholder meetings.
- Oversees the maintenance of databases and other information retrieval systems to help track program work.
- Maintains a best practices file of case studies and information to support Conservation Vision.
Additional Functions
- Assists in developing outreach materials, including factsheets, presentations, exhibit materials, and reports.
- Assists in preparing grant proposals and reports; assists in meeting reporting deadlines.
- Perform other relevant duties, including some administrative tasks, as necessary.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required with minimum 2 years related work experience.
- Course work in economics, environmental studies/science, statistics, urban planning, public policy, or law strongly preferred.
- Superior written and oral communications skills.
- Strong academic research and analytic skills. Experience summarizing data, policy papers and research preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Highly proficient with computers, graphics and spreadsheets. Experience manipulating large data sets and using advanced excel functionality strongly preferred.
- Ability to work under pressure, juggle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently or as a team member as appropriate.
- Demonstrated commitment to parks, open space and land preservation a plus.
- Ability to use good judgment, takes initiative, and makes recommendations in resolving problems.
- Available for regular travel, often overnight.
