Major Responsibilities:  Work as a member of Ducks Unlimited’s conservation team in Texas to deliver private land wetland conservation projects along the Gulf Coast. The successful applicant will primarily work with private landowners to identify and develop wetland conservation projects that provide critical benefits to waterfowl through federal, state, and other public funding opportunities. 

 

Specific Duties:

  • Work with private landowners, farmers, and ranchers, to identify and implement DU administered wetland conservation projects.

  • Advise landowners of opportunities to consider and enroll in voluntary conservation programs available from federal, state, and other organizations.

  • Coordinate restoration activities with other organizations and partners.  

  • Assist DU engineering staff with field topographic surveys involving levees and water control structures, and may perform construction managementand project checkout on completed and ongoing projects.

  • Assist the Texas conservation team to analyze the effectiveness of conservation actions to improve and protect waterfowl habitat in high priority regions of Texas.

  • Assist the Texas conservation team in public grant writing efforts to help secure the funding necessary to achieve the goals of DU’s Gulf Coast initiative.

  • Work with local DU committees to provide information on DU conservation efforts and assist with fundraising efforts as appropriate.

  • Assist in developing press releases, articles, and presentations that increase public awareness of the issues surrounding waterfowl habitat in the Gulf Coast region, the various efforts undertaken and/or supported by DU, and the successes achieved by DU and partners.  

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated passion for conserving wetland ecosystems and waterfowl resources.

  • Knowledge of wetland ecology, marsh management, and waterfowl biology.

  • Ability to work with farmers, ranchers, and agency biologists.

  • Basic surveying skills and familiarity with AutoCAD highly desired.

  • Prefer experience with wetland restoration and enhancement practices including moist-soil management, watershed improvements, and marsh enhancement.

  • Knowledge of agricultural practices along the Texas Gulf Coast.

  • Prefer experience with USDA Farm Bill conservation.

  • Ability to coordinate with conservation partners towards a strategic goal.

  • Knowledge of state and federal agencies and conservation programs working to protect and restore wetlands in an agriculturally dominated landscape.

  • Skills in written communications, public speaking, and establishing good working relationships with landowners and partners.

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, engineering or a related field. An Associate degree with experience may be substituted.

 

Reporting Relationship:

The successful candidate will report to the Manager of Conservation Programs for Texas.

 

Work Location:

The work associated with this position will be primarily the Gulf Coast of Texas.  The position will be located in Richmond, Texas but will require travel throughout much of the Texas Coast.
