Conservation Specialist

*(3-year term position)

 

Duty Station:  Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge, South Dakota

 

Application Period:  07/09/2012 to 07/20/2012

 

Start Date:  Negotiable

 

Duties:  Assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and Ducks Unlimited with promoting, evaluating and successfully acquiring perpetual conservation easements on wetlands and grasslands in the Prairie Pothole Region of South Dakota.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Contact landowners to inform them about the conservation easement program and explain opportunities for enrollment.
  • Conduct biological evaluations on potential easement properties as the initial step to prioritize each tract of land for easement acquisition. 
  • Coordinate with the Wetland District Manager on easement contacts and preparation of easement evaluations for the Manager’s approval.

 

Education and experience needed:

  • Knowledge of wetland/grassland ecology of the Prairie Pothole Region, habitat management techniques, and knowledge of migratory birds and local wildlife.  
  • B.S. in Wildlife Biology or similar degree.
  • Experience working with private landowners.

 

 Skills needed:

  • The vast majority of these projects occur on private lands.  It is essential that the candidate for this position has the skills and abilities to work with private landowners.
  • Must be self-motivated and have persuasive communication abilities to effectively initiate contacts with local landowners via phone, mail, and/or in-person visits. 
  • Must have excellent organizational skills to follow up on contacts.
  • Must have ability to work independently with limited oversight, and also work well as part of the overall team.
  • Must have excellent technology and computer skills to prepare maps, data bases, and operate GPS/GIS hardware and software.

 

This position offers much personal satisfaction to those who value the importance of protecting migratory bird habitat in the Prairie Pothole Region of the U.S.  Employees may be asked to work some evening and weekend hours in order to contact landowners when they are available.  *This is a three-year term position with the opportunity for conversion to a permanent position pending securement of long-term funding.
