Job Description:

Rangeland/Habitat Technicians (two positions) will be responsible for collecting nested-frequency, production, and utilization monitoring data at key upland areas to aid in the grazing permit renewal for ranches grazing on BLM and Forest Service lands in Elko County, Nevada. Technicians also will be responsible for mapping vegetation communities, collecting shrub assessment data, and providing management recommendations on the quality of sagebrush communities within a mule deer habitat assessment located in Sublette County, Wyoming. Specific duties include selecting, locating, and monitoring keys areas on diverse ecological sites, large-scale vegetation community mapping (community assessment and GIS digitizing), detailed monitoring using transects, photo documentation, GPS documentation, and making management recommendations.

Applicants should expect 7-10 day work related trips to Nevada as well as possible overnights in the field. Housing may be provided depending upon field locations and a per diem for food will be given when traveling outside of Jackson. Experience with plant identification, navigation, GPS/GIS, data entry, data management, and rangeland management recommendations are required. Applicants should possess a BS in Botany, Range Science, Animal Science, Ecology, Resource Management or related field, multiple seasons of technician experience, and excellent physical condition. The position demands extensive hiking in rugged terrain and driving of 4x4 vehicles off-road to remote locations. Technicians will be supervised by a Range Ecologist in the field and will be expected to work independently and as part of a field crew. Applicants must be able to start on June 6.

Qualifications & Skills:

• BS in Botany, Range Science, Ecology, Resource Management or related field
• Excellent plant identification skills in sagebrush, willow, and aspen communities
• Demonstrated ability to navigate using aerial photos, topographical maps, and GPS
• Experience digitizing with GIS
• Experience driving 4-wheel drive vehicles off-road
• Experience working independently and as part of a field crew
• Ability to hike for 8-10 hours/ day in rugged terrain
• Knowledge of ranch communities and operations 
• WFA & CPR certification (required by June 13)
