Description

Born Free, the internationally renowned animal welfare and wildlife conservation organisation, is seeking to recruit a Conservation Projects Manager, based at our Head Office in Horsham, West Sussex.

Working as part of a busy and dynamic team, this is an exciting opportunity to work in one of the fastest growing international wildlife charities, with a recognised and high profile media presence. Born Free is dedicated to stop animal suffering and to protect animals in the wild; it has a wide portfolio of welfare and conservation projects dealing with some of the worlds most endangered species.

We are looking for a successful and motivated individual who has relevant experience in delivering support to conservation programmes, a good understanding of the current and emerging threats to wildlife worldwide, and who is familiar with ecological and social science tools to address conservation problems. The successful candidate will be a reliable and enthusiastic team player with well-developed management and people skills, and the ability to support the delivery of a well-managed portfolio of field conservation projects world-wide.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • To support the Head of Conservation and the Conservation Team deliver Born Free’s conservation strategy;
  • To support the Head of Conservation in developing and managing a portfolio of flagship projects, providing scientific and technical expertise in their design and development, ensuring accountability, analysing data and evaluating project efficacy;
  • To assist the Conservation Team and the Enterprise and Partnerships Department in the preparation of scientific grant applications for our flagship projects;
  • Provide financial and administrative support to our implementing partners through the application of bilateral MOUs;
  • To assist the Head of Conservation in managing  international relationships with project partners in the field, by proactively   communicating with project leaders and partners, tracking down project progress, ensuring the submission of reports and content for media outreach, conducting site visits to assess impact and vetting new proposals;
  • To review progress and annual reports from project partners, providing feedback to them and summary assessments to the Conservation Team;
  • To update the project database with project progress against targets;
  • To carry out library and online research and produce reports;
  • To communicate Born Free’s animal welfare and wildlife conservation priorities, positions and policies to collaborators, partners, internally to Born Free’s ‘communications’ teams and to the general public.
  • Promote Born Free’s mission, objectives, and Compassionate Conservation philosophy.

Experience:

  • Relevant postgraduate degree;
  • 5 years International field experience, managing field projects;
  • In-depth understanding of conservation issues in the tropics
  • Excellent project management, analytical and organisational skills including good financial accountability;
  • Excellent technical report writing skills;
  • Quantitative analytical skills; familiarity with R package preferable;
  • Experience analysing biological/social science data and producing scientific research reports;
  • Proficiency with databases and spreadsheets; proficiency in GIS software is preferred;
  • Demonstrated fund-raising experience is preferred;
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentational skills;
  • Ability to build good relationships with project leaders and external collaborators to drive Born Free’s conservation strategy;
  • Ability to work independently doing library and online research in relevant topics;
  • Ability to prioritise work and manage time and projects effectively, often against firm deadlines.
  • Fluency in French is advantageous.

This is a role with a minimum salary of £30,000 (dependent on qualifications and experience) and 20 days holiday per annum. This position is full-time with some international travel.
