Description

Job Title: Chapter Conservation Program Manager

Chapter: Washington State

Managed by: Chapter Chair

Regular Reporting To: Chapter Chair, Conservation Chair, Legislative Chair, Political Chair and appropriate regional staff

Context: Organizes and implements a single issue campaign that may be a state level component of a national Sierra Club campaign.  The specific conservation issue will manifest itself into different projects throughout the state. Coordination with national or regional staff is required.

Scope: The Chapter Conservation Program Manager is responsible for ensuring that the Chapter’s approved conservation program objectives are implemented.  Participates in the development of program strategies. Works closely with volunteers leaders on conservation campaigns.  

Job Activities:

  1. Develops and implements campaign strategies for single issue conservation program and projects in accordance with the chapter strategy.
  2. Recruits and motivates volunteers and enables their role in the effectiveness of the chapter.  Coordinates and facilitates grassroots involvement in single issue conservation program. 
  3. Works with volunteer leaders and other interest groups to identify, recruit and organize volunteers for signle issue conservation campaign.
  4. Attends and facilities meetings, task forces, and events as required for organization of specific conservation campaign.  Builds strong relationships with elected officials, governmental agencies, business leaders and other non-profit organizations, etc.  Represents the Chapter when appropriate.   
  5. Makes presentations to community, political, and governmental bodies regarding single issue chapter conservation campaign.  Writes press releases newsletters, flyers, etc. to keep the Club membership and the general public informed.  
  6. Advocates the Sierra Club position on proposed legislation involving conservation programs; informs and communicates with elected officials, business leaders, governmental agencies, and other non-profit organizations regarding single issue chapter conservation campaign.
  7. Works closely with media representatives to insure that the message of the Club is accurately represented by the media.
  8. Coordinates efforts with the national headquarters staff and ensures that chapter conservation strategies are in compliance with national requirements.
  9. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Job Activities – As required

  1. Interfaces with Chapter contract lobbyist.
  2. Plans and implements an effective public relations program, develops contacts with the media to establish and maintain positive relations to maximize the chapter's credibility and position of issues, when this is an assigned program area.
  3. Assists the Chapter Conservation Chair in the planning and implementation of the core conservation efforts and programs, when this is an assigned program area.
  4. Assists with chapter fundraising activities, when this is an assigned program area.

Knowledge & Skills:

-- BA/BS degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a closely related field.

-- 2-3 years experience in the environmental field that includes research and organizing campaigns, press relations and public speaking.

-- Excellent written and oral communication skills.

-- Excellent knowledge and background in specific issue areas of the environmental field related to assigned programs and campaigns

  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Requires Travel
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
