Through the GLOBE (Growing Leaders on Behalf of the Environment) internship program, The Nature Conservancy hires students and recent college graduates to fill paid internship positions during a 10-week summer internship. This is a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to bridge the gap between what is learned in the classroom and on-the-ground work in the world of conservation. Additionally, the GLOBE program provides interns with the chance to directly work toward a sustainable future for our planet on the side of the Conservancy, the world’s largest environmental organization.

Throughout the summer of 2014, the Conservation Outreach GLOBE Intern will help to maximize our efforts in meeting Chapter, state and regional conservation goals and priorities. The CWNY Chapter has identified connecting people with nature as an important strategy throughout the region. This will be accomplished through a multi-pronged approach with significant contributions and coordination from the Conservation Outreach Globe Intern. This approach consists of installing new, and improving existing preserve infrastructure; working with and developing citizen scientists to help collect ecological data and restore important habitats, and connecting the general public with nature, while at the same time raising the profile of the Conservancy.   

The majority of the Conservation Outreach Globe Intern's time will focus on two priority projects. The first includes working with Chapter staff and local butterfly experts to restore important butterfly habitat at The Thousand Acre Swamp preserve.  This restoration project will benefit not only butterflies but the many visitors to our preserve.  This project has two main goals, 1. improve and restore butterfly habitat and 2. increase the visitors enjoyment and connection with nature at the Chapter's most visited preserve. Specifically the Globe Intern will help coordinate restoration aspects of the project including preparing the site for planting, coordinating volunteers, draft design and installation of interpretive signage, and the butterfly nectar species plantings. The second priority is the design and coordination of a new Conservancy trail in the western Finger Lakes region.  Responsibilities associated with this project include trail design, trail construction, working with and empowering volunteers and designing interpretive materials.  It is anticipated that throughout the 10-week period, the Conservation Outreach Globe Intern will participate and assist in various additional stewardship and education and outreach activities.  These include working with volunteers and the LEAF program interns on ecological monitoring projects and urban forest health assessments. They will work closely with the marketing and communications staff to coordinate Chapter led hikes at various preserves throughout the region, while highlighting the important conservation achievements and current conservation strategies.

• High school diploma and 1 year’s training in science-related field
• Experience performing physical work.
• Driver’s license and clean driving record

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will participate in ecological management projects throughout the Chapter. She/he will work closely with conservation and communications staff to research and gather data relating to conservation planning and strategy implementation and marketing outreach.  This may include one or more of the following functions.

• Gathers and synthesizes data relating to conservation implementation and/or other actions
• Experience utilizing computer programs to enter and analyze scientific data
• Develops and implements habitat restoration plans.
• Coordinates trail work groups
• Designs interpretive materials
• Assist in preserve and ecological management operations
• Works with Chapter staff, partners and volunteers to achieve conservation success

• This is a full-time, temporary internship position with a position term of June 1, 2014 - August 8, 2014.

3. Applicant must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Recent graduates applying for internship positions should be graduates of the past 2 years.

Intern Selection Process

• 2-3 phone interviews will be conducted for applicants selected to interview
• Additional information may be required before making a final decision
• All applicants will be notified of final selection by mid-March.
