This is an exciting opportunity for a talented person who is passionate about
conservation to work with two unique and charismatic species in Australia’s only
Biodiversity Hotspot. Birds Australia is a not-for-profit organisation whose aim is the
conservation of Australia’s native wildlife through the generation and sharing of
knowledge about our native birds and their habitats.
 
Carnaby’s and Baudin’s Black-Cockatoos are listed under state and federal
legislation. Birds Australia implements key recovery actions for the conservation
management of these species through collaboration with various stakeholders, and
facilitates the annual Great Cocky Count. 
 
Birds Australia is seeking a suitably qualified Conservation Officer to engage and
support a broad range of volunteers, communities and stakeholders, and to
implement the 2012 & 2013 Great Cocky Counts throughout the greater Perth
Metropolitan Area and regional South West. The Conservation Officer will also be
responsible for regular reporting and the development of an annual Great Cocky
Count report. Ultimately the role works to protect and better manage critical habitat
for the conservation of threatened cockatoos. 
 
Duties include the coordination of the 2012 and 2013 Great Cocky Counts; the
engagement, support and co-ordination of volunteers and professionals;
identification and survey of Black-Cockatoo evening roosts, nesting and foraging
sites; record keeping, data entry and report delivery; developing strong community
and professional networks; and developing communication materials and engaging
with the media.
 
Applicants must have excellent communication and networking skills, be highly
motivated, a self starter and able to work independently. Applicants with scientific
report writing, statistical analysis skills and some experience with GIS and event
coordination will be highly regarded. A ‘C’ Class driver’s licence is essential. 
 
The position is full time for a fixed term to 30th June 2013. Salary: $56,200 + 9%
superannuation.
