Conservation Marine Team Leader

Total package value up to £32,445 pa

(accompanied status including salary + allowances and housing)

We are looking for an experienced marine conservation manager to lead our Marine Conservation Team and protect the unique ocean environment around Ascension Island. The Ascension Island Marine Protected Area was designated in August 2019 and is one of largest areas of protected ocean in the world. This is an opportunity for you to drive the management, monitoring and research in the reserve and work with the Ascension Island Government, local community and international stakeholders to realise the huge potential of the MPA for global marine conservation.

We are looking for someone with a strong background in marine science and conservation management who will be able to lead our small team based on Ascension and forge partnerships with research organisations and NGOs across the globe. Crucially you will have experience of planning and conducting fieldwork in sometimes challenging conditions and translating research and monitoring into practical management interventions. You will require a good knowledge of marine ecosystems, threats to marine biodiversity and sustainable management practices. You must have a strong grounding in project management and team leadership, as well as excellent communication and engagement skills. Ascension Island is a challenging environment to live and work in, so you will need to be resilient and adaptable in order to thrive.

We are offering a two year, accompanied status, contract meaning your partner and children under 18 years of age can join you in Ascension. In addition to the annual salary of £16,780 per year (taxable in Ascension) the position attracts the following benefits and allowances:

  • Rent free furnished accommodation worth approx. £400 per month
  • A food allowance of £7,200 a year accompanied or £3,600 single status per year
  • An electricity allowance worth £938 per year
  • A water allowance worth £2,729 accompanied or £1,360 single status per year
  • Relocation costs for your personal effects, including the shipment of a vehicle
  • One mid-contract return journey to your country of recruitment
  • A gratuity payable on the successful completion of a 2year contract
  • 30 days annual holiday (with additional 9 days public holidays)
  • Free primary dental and medical care
  • Free schooling for children from 4 up to 16 years
  • Free annual travel insurance
