Position: Conservation Field Technologist
Organization: Panthera

Panthera seeks a full-time Conservation Field Technologist. This position, available March 2015, is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of conservation and technology, serving as a liaison between Panthera’s Tigers Forever Program and the Panthera Technology Team. Although the position is based in New York City, frequent travel to field sites will be required and international experience, especially in tiger-range countries, is preferred. The successful candidate will assist in the coordination and development of Panthera’s anti-poaching technology projects and also provide administrative support to the Tigers Forever Program. The position will require working closely with Panthera’s Chief Technologist and Tiger Program Manager. This individual is expected to have excellent communication skills, as liaison with project partners is key.

Principal responsibilities and duties

  • Coordinate the field-testing and implementation of new anti-poaching technology (e.g. Panthera’s wireless “PoacherCam”) and tiger-monitoring systems
  • Travel to field sites as necessary to assist in technological trials and implementation. Trips to the field can last anywhere from two weeks to two months
  • Maintain and build relationships with outside organizations to increase the impact of anti-poaching technology
  • Assist Tiger Program Manager with administrative responsibilities and serve as Tiger Team liaison with Communications, Development, and Finance
  • Research emerging technologies that may benefit tiger conservation.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency and interest in conservation technology (e.g. camera traps, GIS), and able to learn new technologies quickly
  • Strong written and oral communication
  • Strong international experience, e.g., conducting scientific fieldwork in the tropics
  • Self-motivated, confident, and able to work independently
  • Willing to travel to remote field sites, often at short notice
  • College degree required

The ideal candidate has the following skills, educational training, and qualities:

  • Proficiency in languages of tiger-range countries (e.g. Bahasa Indonesia, Thai)
