Purpose and General Description

The Conservation Coordinator, Ontario Region, supports the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s actions to conserve biodiversity in Ontario by providing expertise and support on conservation science and stewardship, and builds capacity by coordinating field data and protocols, intern and volunteer training and support, and research partnerships.

Duties and Responsibilities

Conservation Planning and Information (25%)

  • Provide guidance to subregions on NCC’s standardized methods and templates in the development of Natural Area Conservation Plans (NACPs) and NACP annual progress reports.
  • Use NCC’s Land Information System (LIS) to identify priorities, trends, opportunities for coordination and capacity needs.
  • Provide support to subregions on standardized field data collection and field data entry in LIS to ensure accurate queries and reports.
  • Support data collection, analysis and report writing for regional conservation planning and biodiversity assessment projects.
  • Support subregions in the preparation of Conservation Project Assessments, Conservation Project Summaries and Property Management Plans as required.
  • Assist in preparing quarterly and annual reports on biodiversity and threats on NCC properties and natural areas.
  • Support the Coordinator, GIS, and Assistant, GIS, in regional GIS needs as appropriate.

Land, Water and Species Management (35%)

  • Provide guidance on NCC’s standards and support the coordination and sharing of stewardship techniques, protocols, monitoring, management and reporting.
  • Evaluate and report on NCC’s conservation success, monitor success of current stewardship practises and identify innovative approaches and tools to land stewardship.
  • Support emerging province-wide initiatives on invasive species management, climate change adaptation and freshwater conservation.
  • Support subregions in undertaking field inventories, monitoring and implementation of conservation actions as required.
  • Assist subregional stewardship staff in the selection and engagement of stewardship contractors and suppliers and provide guidance on regional administrative procedures.
  • Operate as Ontario Region’s Field Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
  • Build capacity in stewardship staff, interns, and others involved in NCC science and stewardship field work by organizing annual staff training in areas of health and safety (i.e., first aid, CPR, WHMIS), field techniques, training opportunities, conferences, monthly stewardship conference calls, volunteer management and risk assessment and research and develop related resources.
  • Coordinate the research of key regional stewardship issues.

Academic and Expert Partnerships (15%)

  • Work with sub-regional conservation staff to maintain NCC’s list of priority research projects.
  • Work with academic partners to link researchers with priority projects.
  • Provide regular reports on academic and research partnerships.
  • Support engagement of expert volunteers (e.g. consultants, naturalists) in assisting with baseline inventories of NCC properties.

Conservation Volunteers and Interns (20%)

  • Coordinate implementation of Ontario’s Conservation Volunteers Program.
  • Coordinate the development, design and scheduling of volunteer activities (e.g. monitoring protocols, restoration techniques) that effectively complete priority actions as outlined in NCC property management plans, balanced with the needs and abilities of volunteers.
  • Work with subregional stewardship staff to ensure appropriate training and safety procedures are in place prior to the commencement of any volunteer work on NCC properties.
  • Work closely with NCC staff to ensure a professional and well organized volunteer experience.
  • Develop procedures, best practices and training materials to support sub-regions in recruitment of effective local stewards for NCC properties.
  • Coordinate the recruitment, hiring and training of interns, manage region-wide aspects of training, lead reporting of intern program results, and integrate with the national intern program.
  • Support sub-regional staff on implementing and expanding the Conservation Volunteer (CV) program.
  • Prepare reports on Ontario’s Conservation Volunteer program in coordination with the sub-regional staff and development team. Manage the financial aspects of the CV program and integrate with the national volunteer program.

Fundraising and Special Projects (5%)

  • Support the development of funding proposals and presentations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Conservation Science Manager and Director of Conservation.

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Honours degree in a field integral to conservation or equivalent with a minimum of two years related experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles of applied conservation biology, conservation planning and management.
  • Knowledge of Ontario’s ecosystems, vegetation communities and species.
  • Basic GIS skills, or willingness to acquire them.
  • Familiar with NatureServe Centre and other sources of biodiversity information.
  • Familiar with current invasive species threats and control mechanisms.
  • Must have excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with great attention to detail and ability to design and manage multiple complex projects.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems using the available resource and use creativity in producing output products.
  • Ability to interact positively with a wide range of people, including scientists, government officials, landowners and NCC staff, donors, and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of field safety training and procedures and volunteer management
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed.
